Ostsee boat markings

My Luger got O.2014 (witch is erased with a line) and O.96 on the back of the grip.

I have been told that "O" stands for "Ostsee" and the number is what boat it was on.

Is there a list over these boats? It would be interessting to find out witch boat it was on;)

I believe that you will find out that the 2014
is the property # of the weapon. The # 96 shows that the weapon was re issued and given a new #

Hi Morgan,

Unfortunately, the german Naval property marking scheme almost never identified the individual boat/ship to which a piece was issued as the logistics plan was to rotate crews and crew weapons to other boats/ships as the vessel came in for drydock and extended overhaul.

There are exceptions, however. Most exceptions are with submarines and submarine organizations. There are documented cases of pistols being marked to individual submarines as well as to submarine flotillas/halbflotillas. I possess a piece marked to the U-11 and I have a dear friend and fellow member of the Navy Luger Cabal, who has a piece marked to the second (?) halb flotilla. Both pieces and markings are unquestionably genuine.

As far as strikeovers and renumbering of navy property markings are concerned, you may wish to search the Forum archives for a post i did a year or so ago addressing Naval Property markings. An interesting, if frustrating, confounding and counter-intuitive exercise.

Hope this helps.
