Help for a new guy

I wonder if someone could give me some advice about a luger I received. My father-in-law obtained it in Italy during war. It has a holster with the officers name etched into the leather. The gun is stamped 1938 S/42..and all the parts have the same numbers "01". I would like to learn more about this weapon if someone has the time to respond back to a new guy. I don't know what its value is but the story behind it is very interesting. Thanks for any help or advice.

Hello Jerry, glad you dropped by!

I can at least tell you that the date is 1938 and S/42 is the code name for Mauser, while there were approx., 113,800 Lugers made that year, so they are not uncommon, but any Luger is nice to have!

Can you tell us any markings on the gun?

Proofs? (see on your left under tech information if you came through www.lugerforum.com) Tell us what and where proofs and markings are located.

There are forms in this section, where you can print out and then write down pertinent information.

What serial number is on the gun? To include any letters next to or under the serial number?

Can you provide pictures, to include side, top, etc?

Jerry,
one of the first things that you should learn is that people here LOVE to see pictures of Lugers. Its become quite an art form on this forum. Its not mandatory though, just fun.
