Possible Purchase
 

Hello, I am new to this forum.

I have the oppertunity to purchase the following gun for about $300

It is a S/42 with 1938 markng on breach.

Serial number 8491.

All serial numbers on gun match. The magazine has a plastic bottom and no serial numbers

The proof marks on right side of breach appear to be #46 and 47 on the list on this site. The proof mark on the barrel also matches numbers 46 and 47. There is a 63 under the first proof mark, and possibly a 91 under the second. Very hard to see.(would match serial number if it is)

There is a third proof mark that looks like number 66 on the website.

Problems: The grips are wooden and in great shape, and have the serial number on the inside of grip. But grips have been painted black.

The gun is in great shape, very little pitting, and only small scratches where someone probably used a screwdriver on disassembly.

BUT, someone tried to re-blue the gun using what appears to be a type of paint. This finsish did not ruin the original blueing, which appears to be the salt bath type of finish. I can actually remove the new finish with my finger nail. It was painted on the backstrap and muzzle.

I am not a collector,used to be a FFL so anyone who knows me brings me old guns that they run into. I would buy this gun with the inention of reselling it. (I do have a number of smith and wesson, and ruger revolvers from the 1950's, but am not a collector)

Is this a reasonable price?

I forgot to mention, gun has a "h" mark. The owner thought gun was broken, but it actually was not assembled correctly. The link that attaches the the slide assembly to the frame was not connected. Gun now works fine. I guese I have to tell him that before I make my offer.

You can get more than $300 selling it as parts, minus the frame on e-bay, so yes, it is worth the price. From what I have seen the last couple of years, the cheapest you see "shooters" is around $450, and usually $500-$600.

So the price is very reasonable and I bet you could get a quick turn around of $100 on this forum...

The owner actually decided to keep it once I fixed it. But I will get back to him.

He also has two other ones that "look like Ruger .22's"

Ps guys, I am new to Lugers but not new to guns. The price of a gun is not dictated by books but by what someone is willing to pay for it. But if I get the gun and decide to sell it I will be fair.

I recently sold some guns from an estate. Well, about 40 of them. Some went for way over bluebook, some way less.

One of the wierdest ones was a Remington carbine model 14A. I put it up for sale less then the going rate on gunsamerica, and was flooded with offers.

Unfortunately for me I accepted the first offer. I then got about 10 offers for double the price I was offering. Just like you Luger guys, there are Remington guys, and this was a rifle offered in a caliber they needed. But a deal is a deal.

Even if I don't get the gun, or the others he has, I will probably lurk around this site. The forum is very informative.
