Updated Topic - Looking For Gun's Value

Hi - this is an update to a previous topic. I posted a message a few weeks ago, and now have a photo to add to the description, which follows: My Mother-in-Law is asking me how much her gun is worth. It's a 1916 9mm Luger, with proof marks similar to, but not identical to, proof mark # 15 as shown in the technical information section of this site (three characters followed by a heraldic eagle). This indicates it is a DWM Luger from 1914-1918, which is consistent with the Manufacturer's logo (DWM) and date. The serial number is 9021 with all pieces matching (21). There is one magazine but it does not match the serial number of the gun (and is not blued). It has a typical luger military holster with takedown tool. It has walnut grips (good shape), and the bluing is 70%+, with some light corrosion on the high points. Front and rear sights are fixed. Bore is in good shape. Anyway, I appreciate any opinion offered, and thanks for reading.http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/P9210005a.JPG

It is a police Luger first of all with sear safety and a magazine safety, wonder if the mag safety works? Most have been deactivated!

Hoodman,

Does the little tab behind the trigger that comes out from under the grip have an extension behind the trigger that keeps the trigger from being pulled when the magazine is out of the gun, and moves out of the way to permit the trigger to be pulled when the magazine is in the gun?

If so, you have a rare, complete magazine safety device that will add a premium to the value of the gun. As Thor stated, most of these have been deactivated by clipping off the extension that goes behind the trigger.

If your Mother-in-law's gun does have a working magazine safety, and she wants to sell it, I am interested in buying it! <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />

Hoodman, Looks like a very nice pistol, a little rough around the edges as you say but other factors could come into play on value. The left grip has the magic missing chip under the safety, not good but...The holster is a consideration too. It has a seperate value. Would love to see it's condition and type. I bought a rig just like this minus the mag safety for $1000.00 not too long ago from a Veteran. Had the Police holster serialed to the pistol. 2 magazines, one Haenel Schmeisser serialed to the pistol. Thought I got the bad end of the bargain but prices caught up with it.

If you sell it to Hugh he can fix the grip...Jerry Burney

Thanks a bunch to everyone for replying! The magazine safety has been deactivated. When I remove the magazine the trigger may still be pulled.

Sorry, just noticed the question about the holster. Here's the holster, and other views of the gun. Thanks again for replying, everyone!

Hello Hoodman,

I think a few weeks back, one of our Froum members and resident experts, Brad Simpson, commented that he and his father have seen many police lugers but few with a 100% intact magazine safety.

Looks like you have quite the find ! Congratulations !

Regrads,

Pete... <img src="graemlins/yltype.gif" border="0" alt="[typing]" />

I believe Brad indicated that he had only seen one Luger with the magazine safety intact, and that his father had seen maybe a half dozen or so. I have yet to see the first one with the magazine safety intact.

Hoodman, Not a bad looking holster, could use a little cleanup but from what I can see it is in good condition with no damage. Is that a maker mark on the front? Is there a date on the holster? Got a photo of the back? Any markings on the tool? Thanks, Jerry Burney

hoodman 09-28-2002 12:00 PM

Jerry: Thanks for your question. I don't have a photo of the back, but there is a stamp on the front that does not show up in the photo. It reads "L.Z.A.", with a heraldic eagle stamp below it, then "H Stettin" below that. A clearer identical stamp is found on the reverse, between the belt loops, and a larger stamp "Ss Kg 4142" is located on the reverse near the butt of the gun. There is no date on the holster or tool, but the tool has a "3" stamped on it in unusual script. That's about all I can tell you; I don't have a digital camera and had to borrow one temporarily to take the pictures that are shown. Thanks!
