Have a BYF 42 in my collection

That I want to sell. I really know nothing about Lugers. I have been digging in the archives for info. The serial # is 38xx. All the parts are matching and the finish is excellent. Unfortunately there is some pitting in the barrel but it still shoots good. I put about 20 rounds through it stripped and cleaned it then put it away. I have 4 mags with it. The one that was in the gun is a FXO coded aluminum base mag. It has a 1 and either a K or H on it. I also have a holster with it but someone trimmed some of the leather out of it. Looks liked they wanted to try to make it easier to draw the gun. There is also a tool in the holster. Trying to get a value of this package. As nice as this gun is I want to sell it so I can get something else.

Hello CG,

The best place for soemthing like this is in the for sale section, just below all other postings.

Pictures of condition, approx price for it and pictures would probably sell it fairly fast. Prices can fluctuate, but if it hasn't been reblued and is all matching (all parts must be correct), low end should be $750 - $900, but of course everything depends on condition. If the magazines are original, they are worth $50 or so each and up, depending on condition and if they are marked. The holster, being modified is probably worth $50 to $75 and the tool from $25 - 55, depending on if it is marked and original.

These are all low end values and a true collector able to look at pictures or the real gun and pieces can give you a true estimate.

(And if the gun is mismatched, reblued or in bad shape, then $350 - $500 for it.)

Thanks for the information. I had some stuff written down but had since lost it. Going to try and get some pic's tommorow.

Any easy way to determine if the gun was reblued?

Edward Tinker 09-15-2002 04:25 PM

There are some pictures from today that show one example of bluing and where the normal bluing doesn't touch, but I don't have my books with me on this trip, so can't tell you if that pertains to BYF 42's.

tacfoley...

Terry... would it be possible for you to do a photo layout of exactly what the government did to the parts of your mint byf Luger to deactivate it?

A visual reminder of the potential fate of our firearms here in the U.S. could relight the fire within us all regarding the protection of our 2nd amendment rights...

You could either post the photos here or create one of those nifty new gallery albums that John D. just made available to the membership...

Thanks, and regards...

John S.

Terry,

Your stories are really a source of heartburn for a gun person like myself... I will never be able to concieve how the citizens of your nation ever allowed themselves to be disarmed while you were out defending the crown... what a travesty!

Now, regarding the photographs... first stop is the Lugerforum.com homepage:

Our Homepage

Then take the link on the left frame that is titled "Member Gallery"

Next, register as a new gallery member... (being a member of the forum doesn't get you out of the new registration, the gallery is a separate feature that you must login to use)

Once you have registered ... you have the ability to login and create an album. the rest of the steps are pretty intuitive... use the add photo feature to upload your photos, and after they appear in your album you can give them captions describing what each of the photos is all about.

If you have any problems... send me a private message and I'll see if I can help via the typed word...

John,
Although I have created a username and password for myself on the Member Gallery, I can only access the "menu" for creating and editing my gallery entry by using the username "luger" and the password "forum" as originally set up by John D. Am I doing something wrong?

John Sabato 09-17-2002 02:41 PM

No Ron, You aren't doing anything "wrong"... but the ownership of the album you created using that original identity won't change to the new userID that you created... Since the albums were created as an experiment while John D. tweaked the new code... I would recommend that you delete the original album and re-create it using your current valid ID and password. That way all new albums that you create will be under the new name and no one will be able (excluding administrators) to add/delete stuff from your albums.

Since the new gallery allows albums within an album, my recommendation would be to create a new album called "Ron Wood" and make all your subsequent albums subordinate to that one... Sort of a self-service Owner's Corner... which is likely to quickly obsolete the original Owner's Corner feature of the forum.

Sorry about the wordy answer, but the info was for more than just your eyes and I wanted to try and limit followup questions by the gang by providing enough info in the first message.

John,
Almost the right answer, but not quite there yet. You are right, I should not expect to be able to edit the existing gallery that I had created using the new user profile, which would explain why I do not get the "menus" associated with the gallery. However, when I use the new username and password, I only get [preferences] and [logout]. I do not get the [new album] selection. Either there is something awry with my browser, or there is a glitch associated with my new login.

Hey Ron..!

Can you give it a try now??? Also - if you created an album under the generic "luger" and "forum", please let me know which album it was, and I'll change it over to reside with your new User Name and Password, OK???

Best to you!

John D.
(The "other" John on the Forum - who posts a lot less then the other John, who is the tireless "John S.", not to be confused with "John D." - who is the other John, who posts less - thankfully - and whose posts are more "tiresome" then those from "John S."

Your browser cache could possibly be interfering with what you need to see...

When I log in using my new UserID/Password for the gallery, in the upper right hand corner of the browser, I see:

Welcome, John Sabato
[new album] [preferences] [logout]

If you see something else, try logging out and then logging back in after you clear your temporary internet files and browser cache...

Aha! It works now! Thanks John D., evidently you tweaked the right magic thingamajig. Also thank you John S., didn't need to mess with my computer, but sounded like a good way to go.

I even think I understand the above!

P.S. The album I created is "Swiss Family" (not to be confused with Swiss Family Robinson, or All in the Family).

Terry Foley (tacfoley) has sent me the photos that explain how the UK deactivates a Luger as a result of their strict prohibition on the possession of handguns... this photo study is now available in a new album in the Member Gallery...

What a crying shame!

John D. 09-17-2002 05:52 PM

For about the first time in my life I am speechless... I feel like I have just witnessed a rape - and it was perpetrated by those who were supposed to protect us from the same...

Terry - I can't imagine. And perhaps your photos can help us keep and protect the sanctity of what we have... Thanks, for sharing that reminder - as ugly as its reality is...

Edward Tinker 09-17-2002 06:36 PM

Very disturbing. Bad enough that they would ban newer pistols, but such a crying shame to ruin and ban history.

Tacfoley, offer always stands to pop some caps in Washington,

Brandon 09-17-2002 06:57 PM

That was the most disgusting thing I have ever saw! What is the world coming to?

Brandon...
