Starter Collection
As a relatively new Luger collector, I have tried to determine what would constitute a representative small collection, 6-10 examples that best illustrate the history, development and variety of the Luger pistol. I think that it would take six examples as a beginning:
- 1900 model - 1906 " - 1914 type P.08 - 1914 type Navy - 1914 type LP.08 or "artillery" - 1941 or 42 Mauser "Black Widow" Note: One of the 1914 type should be an Erfurt to add another manufacturer and extensive proofing. The Black widow to add another maker, salt blue finish, no strawed parts and plastic grips. From here, it gets a little more difficult. Current thinking would add, in no specific order, the following: - 1929 Bern. Another manufacturer with major changes. - 1908 type. No stock lug. - Krieghoff. Another manufacturer. - ? If one were fortunate enough to assemble such a collection, it should give the collector enough knowledge to decide whether to specialize, and/or on what. I hope this makes some sense and may be helpful to someone. I also invite suggestions, modifications or additions to the list. Yes Russ, I thought about that, but I haven't won the lottery yet. Maybe the next century.

Bruce, Good list, but might I suggest that you also add one of the Mauser 1970 commemorative guns, and finally one of the Stainless Steel models (currently produced by Orimar)...

I could live with only:
1906 American Eagle 1916 DWM Navy & Rig 1917 DWM Artillery & Rig K Date Mauser Luger Black Widow byf 42 Luger Since I only own the Kdate, my short collection is certainly obtainable in my life time. Shoot...I could live with just my K date, but everybody should own at least one Luger! (GRIN) |
