Aftermarket magazines in Stainless...
 

I picked up a newly manufactured luger magazine at a local gunshow with the hopes of using it in my 6" Stoeger. I can't remember the brand off hand right now, but it was an outfit that makes all sorts of replacement mags. Think the name starts with an "M"

Anyhow, it does'nt work. It seems as though the release latch is not catching the mag. The new mag also feels looser in the magazine well than the mag that came with the gun.

Just thought I's share this in case anyone else decided to look for an extra mag.

I guess I can order replacement mags from Orimar. Anyone know how much they go for? Any other brands that work in the new stainless guns?

Its always good to know what the going price is on these new items as they begin appearing.

When distributorship of the stainless Luger changed from Mitchell to Stoeger the magazine was changed from the standard diminsions to a non-standard one.

I'd like to hear a good answer as to why.

Dean, Please be advised that there are 2 series (sorry that I don't have the exact serial number ranges) of Aimco made stainless lugers. The earlier ones were set up for standard PO8 mags and came with new stainless wood bottomed Triple K mags. Later production switched to a thicker walled stainless mag with Eagles stamped into the sides of the wood bottom. These mags will not fit into a standard luger. I have either of the above available @$30 + $5 for priority S*&H. Tom Heller

Dean, the magazine might be a Mecgar, there are a lot of them around but I have never heard of them not working correctly. I can't speak from personal experience though, I have never had one.

ViggoG, I paid $20 for this aftermarket mag.

You got it Herb, the mag is question is Mecgar.
I think I can get this to work if I file the slot for the mag catch a little.

Lugerdoc, thanks for the info. Although I would like to know what Orimar charges for the mags.
Also, the Stoeger mag that I have does not have a wood bottom.

Here are three different magazines. The first is the extruded WWII style magazine, the second a nickel plated Swiss and the stainless from my AIMCO post Stoeger. I could not put the older magazines in the AIMCO, and the AIMCO definitely would not fit my BYF 42. It is too thick. The magazine base on the AIMCO looks like wood, but appears to be and feels like plastic...

Dean, I agree that the CDNN ad is a bit misleading, as the MecGar mags with only fit in the standard PO8 and the early stainless lugers. TH

I have had great luck with stainless Mec-Gars in my 1915 DWM and 1936 Mauser. They work flawlessly in these old guns.

LugerDoc, Let me clarify

The CDNN ad looks to show the correct mag that I need. I believe CDNN's is like the one shown all the way to the right of John's pic (it is like the one that came with my Stoeger). Or do you think CDNN is selling the earlier mags?

The MecGar mag that I bought at the gun show looks like the center one in the picture (although I did not get stainless). It does not fit, but I think if I "tweek it" I might be able to make it work.

I'm just posting this fact so others with stainless guns will not run in the same mistake that I did.

Just as a data point; my 1993 Mitchel, (Aimco), functions fine with original magazines and the Aimco wood bottomed mags it came with fit correctly in my pre 1945 Lugers.

What happened that the MEC GAR magazines would not fit in later model stainless steel Lugers?

The newer magazines are flat sided and this makes the entire magazine as thickas the ribbed portion of a vintage magazine. My year 2000 gun takes the new style as does my newer gun.

A vintage magazine will go into my stainless guns but it rattles around and will not latch into place.

Dean, In checking my latest CDNN catalog, the only stainless mag that they show, is the triple K which only fits the early Mitchell lugers, not your Stoeger stainless. TH

As far as I know, Only Orimar (formerly AIMCO)is making the new style magazines. They are listed to the left in the links and resources.
