Hey Folks.....

Just a quick note for the new folks (and "Welcome" - and a reminder to those who have been around a few years..) - as some have e-mailed me asking why the Forum goes off-line about once a week for a minute or two early in the morning (usually Wed or Thurs about 8AM)....

At that time - I'm updating the code, doing a weekly back-up and flushing the server memory. See - this Forum shares space with a few other forums on the same server, and daily, the server takes about 250,000 unique visitors - so it supports a whole lot of traffic. Sooo - for a few minutes, I need to do some back-ups etc. while it's off-line.

Since I do this early in the AM or weekends, most don't really notice, as it's usually back in a minute or two.... The main site - http://www.lugerforum.com and the Gallery sits on yet other servers - and circuits, so I try to leave them "up" if this forum is being backed up - so at least you have something to do for a minute or "three" <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Anyway - that's what's going on from this end for the folks that asked...

Hmmmm - so much for making a post while I'm playing with code :) Sorry - I posted the above under my "alais"... Shhheeessshhh - I need more coffee... :D

Oh, it must have affected Jans forum too!

:D

I have no clue why its off the last 24 hours again...

And you are apoligizing for a few minutes....

:D ed

not often we get to hear from member #1

Hmmm - honestly - I thought it was just me not being able to get into Jan's Forums, as when I tried last night, I had a browser message that my "Firewall" had been "blocked" - and to contact my "firewall administrator"... Since I'm my own firewall admin - I made a quick call to myself, and was telling me that I'm OK, and that my settings on my firewall were fine... :D

Anyway - there is a guy on my P38 Forum who has a WW2 German Hi-power he posted up, and I wanted to send him there, as Charles - on Jan's site - really assisted with mine....

Now - back to talking to that "Member #1" guy <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

I had some internet trouble that day in 2001 when this revision of the forum came online... I was late and ended up as #7... when I really wanted to be Member # 0 :D

I wonder what would happen if I made a "Member #0"???? Honestly - I dunno - as I never even thought about it!!! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> It would 'prolly throw the database into a tizzy...!! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

When there is a server problem, and you are the ADMIN - it EXISTS. In fact - it has a mind of it's own. In fact - it is smarter then you... In fact - it consumes you... It glares at you in defiance... It defys your every fix, patch and code change... It's almost as if it's possessed - and it enjoys playing it's games with you.....

Until you take a BH (BIG HAMMER) and whack the crap out of it....

Ask me how I know... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

</font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Arial,Helvetica,Geneva">quote:</font><hr /><font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Arial,Helvetica,Geneva">
Here's the deal. We have over the past several months had several attempts to hack the site. While they have not been successful there were some security deficiencies that had to be addressed. Over the past month we have massively upgraded our security features and several Microsoft service packs that protect the database and our server. One of these upgrades corrupted a portion of our database a couple of weeks ago and we had to reload from a back up position from 24 hours earlier-thus some of the pictures you guys uploaded did not show. Yesterday we undertook another security update on a service pack that has taken longer then we expected and when finished has to be tuned to allow some of the content that we do. It is a massive undertaking when 5.5 million topics and entries have to be reuploaded and then adjusted so the security settings don't interfere with what we want. Its sort of a paradox. We want to be as secure as possible yet the exact same information that everybody wants makes that difficult i.e.: uploading information to a server like pictures, links and so forth. So its a tough job and we apologize for the inconvenience but its a necessary evil we have to maintain. As the sophistication of the computer hackers and evil doers grows so must the fixes which take longer for use to be one step ahead. We are working as fast as our fingers can go and should be back up for business as usual very soon.

Hi Jack.!

Thanks for the update and the re-post from what is happening from their public stated view/postition/opinion.
