Gun case lining
 

I've a friend in the cabinetry business whose offered to build me a case so he can try out a couple of ideas.

The only drawback is he's insisting on lining the interior in leather. I'm assuming this is a bad idea based on the fact that a) all the cases I've seen have some type of cloth inside and b) storing a pistol in a leather holster isn't a good idea, so a leather lined case would be no better.

Would anyone agree with my gut feeling, and could they give me a reasoned argument against the leather interior, (will trap moisture against the gun etc).

What would people recommend as the ideal lining material ?

Leather is about the worst thing to keep a gun in contact with. It retains moisture, has chemicals from the tanning process that are corrosive and, since it is an organic substance, provides nourishment for critters who may do far more damage. Ever seen what mouse urine does to blued steel? It ain't pretty.

Thanks for the comments and ideas gentlemen. I think I lean towards the felt / baize type material, it just seems right, but I need to check out the ultra suede, (sounds like it would go well with my Aimco).

Apparently this is going to be a 'french fit' case, we shall see if it ever gets built !

Hi Russ! Pool table felt works real well...it is almost the same as the original type of mateial.. at least it looks quite close... but, ultra suede is super neat, as it is synthetic, and has the look and feel of doe skin... the best feature is that it stretches along one dimension for those difficult compound curves that alway attack on projects like this! (so does the felt,BTW) I'll go back into my lair now! Best to all...till...later...GT

Also! The best glue to use is 3M general spray adhesive... NOT the yellow stuff for vinyl tops...

you may or may not find that fabric called ultra suede now..that was sort of a catch all term for any fabric with that sort of nap. some was nylon, some were blends. a great fabric now on the market is commonly called microfibre, and again, a catch all term for the tight weave used. the microfibre that looks like suede is made of 100% polyester. it really does look and feel like suede, and depending upon the color, if it were in a box as you describe it would be very tough to say if it was or was not suede. it can be washed, is extremely durable, and colors are great. be warned; like any polyester fabric, it has an oil affinity. some oil stains will be permanent.

Hi Susan! Thanks for the update on the material! It's sad to say, but the ultra suede certainly does date me as old, as it was at least 10 years since I used it for a custom box lining! It was certainly some neat stuff though.... Thanks again for the up date...till...later..GT

I have this crazy dream of Dok lining my presentation case for my K date with gold velvet! Still havent found any, I was thinking perhaps folks that makes flags might have it.

Thor: there is a new cottage industry out there; vintage fabric collectors. you can find ads in decorating magazines. someone definately has it. but since that color and fabric are currently en vogue, you should be able to find it done up in pillows at pier one.

You never know where you'll learn something. When I was in the Army, many Sergeants would figure that the new Private coming into the Platoon was a dumb bunny, didn't know anything.

Well, I knew better, he might be a computer whiz, or good at hunting and perfect as a point-man for the platoon, or a natural athlete. No, I always figured that everyone is good at something, because there is too much I don't know, :D
