im looking into buying a luger as a potential investment. i know nothing about lugers, and i dont want to get ripped off. how do i go about finding a quality luger for sale?

it's some guy named ralph e. shattuck; he's supposedly a luger guru. is this guy honest? anyone know of any good sites to buy a quality luger from?

Read a lot first, buying as an investment on anything is risky, but lugers have many pluses and minuses.

Read this forum, top to bottom, buy books, decide on the era you want to buy, then talk to some people and decide what to buy.

Make your desires known in the "Wanted" forum.

Take Ed's advice and do a LOT of reading before you buy. Decide just what you want and then buy the best the budget can afford... and don't shoot it... it will only appreciate in value.

You can find many more if you do a Google search for "luger" or "luger pistol", etc.

The advice given by others, above, is very good. Spend some time and money on luger books to become more knowledgable about these pistols. Maybe buy a $ 400-600 shooter luger, first, to have fun with the gun and learn about its mechanics. Find a luger collector near your home that can help mentor you into knowing what to look for in original versus refinished works. Many refinished pieces are being peddled as "original"...so beware.

It may not be what a seller tells you about a gun. It may be what is "not said" about the piece that you need to know and ask about. A local gun shop owner near me jokes about this and calls it "the policy of ommission"...

If considering web-site sales, get the description of the luger in writing via emails and insist on a 3-5 day inspection/return policy. This written documentation may help you recover your shipping costs (both ways) if a gun is not "as advertised". Recently had an outfit tell me via email that "the concept of originality is too complex to discuss via email and a telephone call might be better". This left me a little cold so I passed on the gun as I sensed some evasiveness. Telephone calls are always good, but follow-up with a written email confirming those discussion before sending money. Ask the seller to read your confirming email and ask them to send a reply-email that he/she agrees with the conclusions in your "documentation" email.
