Hello, I have received some help on updating and adding some information to the FAQ, but wanted some help and infromation on these two topics:

"What are the proper grips for my byf 41 or 42 pistol?"

"How can you tell if the plastic grips on my Mauser Luger are real or fake?"

Ed, big bad John Sabato was on the trail of the real or fake plastic grips about 3 months ago. He never completed his study. I have several "real" grips that may add to the study when John decides he wants to pursue it!!!

Great, didn't forget about that, was hoping to jar some paragraphs of wisdom loose [img]biggrin.gif[/img] Knew they were doing an in-depth study on that, was hoping that little bits might make sense to forum members.

"big bad" John? I thought he died many years ago in a mining accident Frank, [img]biggrin.gif[/img] or at least that's what I remember hearing Jimmy Dean say ... I used to hear that song a lot considering that my family roots includes coal mining in southern VA and WV...

As far as the study on real/fake "Black Widow" grips goes... Luke Smithwick and I were collecting good photographs of known good grips and a couple of bad ones... The article just hasn't been finished because Luke and I have had our hands full of other things to do (especially me since this new forum format was implemented) but I hope to get back to it sometime this fall if Luke is available to help.

I will keep a note of who has genuine grips that we can use as part of the study and you in particular will be contacted when we are ready...

I will probably make an announcement on the forum requesting photographic input at that time as well.

For Ed Tinker... as far as what to do in the updated FAQ regarding the question on these types of grips? Just leave a space and put "answer pending" for now...

OK, "Little" John, sounds like a plan. I have two sets, that have the same characteristics, so if you want photos, just let me know!! [img]wink.gif[/img]

Big Bad Little John!! I forgot to mention I bought a pair of Kalifornia Fakes for my Black Widow Shooter. They look very authentic from the outside, but no screw holes on the inside. I'll make a jpg for you when you get ready!!

So, a couple of friends have helped out, (thanks Brandon and Doubs!) and given me ideas, there is a wealth of information right here on the forum, I just need ideas to look things up [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

Ed, here are some topics which have occurred to me in the last ten minutes or so.

Where does "Parabellum" come from?
What is boosting? faking?
How do you tell the difference between an Erfurt and a DWM magazine shell?
How do you tell the difference between rust blue and salt blue?
How do you tell if a Luger has been re-blued?
What is the Simichrome test?
We need a commonly agreed-upon photographic portrayal of finish condition (% determination).
We need a bibliography in one place, perhaps with brief reviews.

I'll let the parts breakage survey simmer for a couple of weeks and then collate it and send it to you for inclusion--

So, anybody who hasn't fessed up to breaking parts while shooting, there's still time!

"how do you tell the difference between a rust blue and a salt blue"....well I think the best example I can come up with, is the 7.65 and the 7.65 cross outs. WOL page 204, proof 166 states that the .30 cal barrel was rebored to a 9mm. However, the it has been determined that the original .30 cal barrels were take off and new 9mm barrels placed on. This make sence as to rebore a barrel would not, I believe be cost affective. So looking at a true 7.65 gun you can see the differences, though slight....hope this helps
