.45 magazine
 

Amongst other stuff in a box getting thrown out a buddy gave me (.45 & .38 ammo, reloading odds & ends, gun parts, ect.) is a .45 magazine. It appears 95%, have to really look for wear. Its very well made and highly blued up to about 2/3 from the bottom. Then there is no bluing at all. There are no markings anywhere nor is there a loop on the base plate. It has five holes on each side. Are these standard or just a basement bluing project?

Roadkill, The mag that you describe for the Colt 1911, would be correct for one made from 1916, when they eliminated the lanyard loop, until ?, when they started bluing the whole tube. The original reason for the 2 tone effect (not bluing the feed lips) was that it was felt that the high temperature of the bluing bath would weaken the temper of the feed lips. Tom H.

Lugerdoc, thanks. I guess I'd better not throw this in the range bag with the others then. Next gun show I'll bring the box of .45 that came with it to a bullet table and see how old it is. Wouldn't surprise me if it was as old too. Thanks for the info.

RK, what is the headstamp on the ammo? Is it military issue? or commercial?

BTW, when I was coaching an AMU in the early '70s, we had a lot of those two-tone mags in our range box, but the kind WITH the lanyard loops on them... used them like they were meant to be used... super reliable mags. and You just don't see that kind of quality much anymore. That's when there was a lot of master craftsmen working in government and commercial arsenals...

Its Remington commercial but a very old style box. I've got the ammo. I've got the clip. I've got a box full of odds & ends parts and loading stuff for a .45. I bet they threw the gun away. One of those "don't want that thing in the house" deals. And you are right, I've never seen a .45 magazine of this quality. I listed a description of the ammo in the general discussions forum, not any luck. My guess its WWI era. Also got a box of very old Winchester .38 match ammo.

Keep asking about the pistol RK, they might just come across it... That would be a REAL FIND! I tis probably wrapped in an oily rag in the attic. or in a an old cedar trunk... or better yet in the grandfather's kit bag from WWI.

RK, stash the mag and look for another in the junk boxes. Then in those same boxes find a ww1 pouch and you have good trading material!

I whined last Saturday when I had to fork out $50.00 for a M1916 two tone that was about 80% to go with a UMC M1911 to make the rig correct for a trade.

My best buddy Ken's (only guy I ever knew who got treed by an alligator, but then I'm the only guy lots of folks know who was run over by a Humvee. Whatever.) wife's parents own several apartment complexes and folks leave, move, die, ect. and things come up like this. Like everything else, its timing. I've got a 90% M40 single decal Luftwaffe helmet from the attic of a rental house, another friend while building his house lived in a small rental house for a few months, his wife saw a loose board in a closet, pulled out a very nice samauri sword and bayonet. Owner of the house said keep it, problem is they won't let go of it. Someone will probably find it in a closet in 25-30 years. I've got a 1911A1 Remington made in 1945. Magazine goes well with it.
