Takedown tool question

Why do takedown tools have the slot milled into the back side of them? Also, why does the little rolled over edge project beyond the rest of the back? There must be a reason since it would have added steps and cost to making them.

Steve,
The tool is more a loading tool for the magazine than a takedown tool. The hole in the middle fits over the magazine button and the groove on the backside is to fit over the folded seam of the magazine when used to pull down the button on the magazine for loading. The turned out part of the tool is to pull down on with your thumb while loading the magazine.

I knew that it was used to load the magazine but I did not think it through about the rib running down the magazine. Now it all makes sense. The little rolled part I was refering to seems to ride against the rib and keep the tool aligned while in use. Thank you for the answer!

Steve,
I misunderstood your explaination of the rolled over edge. The edge is actually not rolled over, but just what is left after the grooves are machined into the tool.
