Parts Breakage--A Survey
Those of us who shoot our Lugers are alert to the possibility of breaking the occasional part on these 60- to 100-year-old guns. Those of us who collect as well know how much a broken/replaced part can reduce the value of our guns.
What I would like to know is, which parts are actually in jeopardy of breaking, based on real shooting experience? If you have broken a part on your Luger during shooting, or have first-hand knowledge of a non-forum member who has, please post the information here or send it to me by private message. After a suitable length of time I will collate the data and post it, as well as send it on to John S.& company for inclusion somewhere in the informational part of the Forum I'll ante in with two broken ejectors. I think we can include takedown lever springs which have broken or weakened during handling, such that the lever no longer remains locked under fire. I can add two of these to the list. Any others? --Dwight |
1 broken ejector
2 broken takedown bolt springs |
2 ejectors
1 breechblock |
1 chipped extractor, DWM (when purchased)
|
1 holdopen leafspring,(broken) and holdopen device (working edge chipped before I got the gun). Is this what you call it? Does the same thing as slidestop on a 1911. Anyway I replaced the entire thingybob.

Just a firing pin tip for me.
|
One firing pin.
One hold-open spring. One grip-safety spring. (Broken when purchased.) Father told me of a receiver axle pin that broke on one of his Lugers. (1920's or 1930's) |
One rear connector pin and one trigger lever pin. The connector pin was an Efurt and the lever pin was DWM. Oh, and a grip screw that half the head broke off.
|
One weak take down lever spring on a DWM.
One grip screw with part of the head broken off. One split magazine bottom. (wood, 1920 commercial type) One buggered up magazine. (Not sure this should count, somebody dented it.) Two or three cases of the infamous bust the upper rear corner off the left grip, the part that goes behind the safety lever. |
One chipped extractor, DWM.
One receiver axle, DWM. About half the flange end broke off allowing the axle to move and jamb the receiver in the full back position. KFS |
two broken ejectors (on my Finnish Luger)
one broken rear toggle (25 years ago on parts gun) one broken upper receiver (last year on LP08) Ouch! Mike Halbrook |
