Interesting Book On Germany's Ebay
|
That's the late Ian Hogg's book German language edition. It was my first "Luger"reference work and is quite worthless. Hogg states in it that the LP08, which he refers to as the P17, was not made prior to 1917 and that all those examples marked otherwise were reworks.
As a smartass punk I once offered this info to a dealer/collector and he looked at me as though I had three heads. Then he handed me an LP08 holster dated 1915 and said "...splain dat." |
Good one George, thanks for update, I had no idea about this book. Kind of reminds me of the Luger pocket book that states all Luger variations (including the byfs we know as Black Widows) have strawed parts. The pocket book at least has SOME good information in it.

Hi,
Ian Hogg was more a weapons technician than a collector and this can be seen in his books. Funnily enough, he admits his 1917 LP08 mistake in his 2001 issued 'German Handguns' and rightfully states the correct info. |
At least 10% of everything , Ian Hogg has written on all types of weapons is wrong . His information on german weapons is really very poor.I dont think he was much of a technician either.I wrote this man a couple of times about mistakes he had made.He actually wrote back telling me more or less that I had no idea what I was talking about. The facts latter proofed me right. I really cant say to much about this so called expert!!!! .But I
do agree his books next to worthless. |
The guy is neither a good technician nor a good collector; he is good at selling books tho....

Ian Hogg was probably a nice fellow who loved his wife, children and grandchildren. That said, his greatest success was self promotion; check out History Channel's "Story of the Gun" they seem to trot him out for damn near every foreign military weapon program.

I gotta pass on the nice fellow.

Oh well,
Self-promotion is an art in it's self :) But if anyone is still interested in this book, I'd suggest the English version. At least the amount of translation mistakes will be limited :) |
