Prussian vs German
I just took delivery of this WWI Prussian buckle. Who can tell me the difference between Prussia and Germany? And why would they have a different emblem on their buckles?
Thanks! Ron http://forums.lugerforum.com/lfupload/kk17.jpg |
That is a neat buckle and looks in nice condition. Actually, it is a buckle from the kindom of Wurttemberg, which was located between Prussia and Bavaria.

Ron , I found it on ebay. I bought it, a brass WWI German EM buckle and a Weimar nickle-silver buckle. All from the same seller.Got a decent deal from what I've been told. It's actually the best cond. of the 3.

Prussia was part of Germany. Up until the late 1800s Germany consisted of a number of different principalities and did not exist as a unified Germany as we know it today. Germany became unified under the Prussian Chancellor Prince Otto von Bismark. I believe much of the former Prussia is now part of Poland, although I am typing this off the top of my head and I could be wrong.

Alan, Thanks, I have wondered about the different regions. Should have paid attention in history class, instead of thinking about Chicks, Hotrods, and Football.

Ron, If you went to a school that even looked at history and geography from the European point of view, you're doing better than most of us. It wasn't until I got into collecting (stamp & coins, as a kid) that I discovered a lot of history, that's never covered by most US high schools. TH

Tom, I had a world history teacher named Bob Meyers. We called him Hogan. He looked exactly like Bob Crane on "Hogan's Heros". He was the best teacher I ever had. He could get you spellbound about it. He taught us about Attila the Hun, The Weimar Republic, everything. He even talked about how the White Russian colonies came to be in the Willamette valley just north of here in Woodburn Oregon. He is largly responsible for my addiction to history. A great teacher.
