Test fire A-OK!
Took my 1917 out today for a first-time shoot...verruh niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice.............
It ate up all FMJ (115 gr), esp. after I realized the Luger needs a stronger grip than the typical modern semi-auto... Then it ate up a box of 115 gr Silvertips with not a miss... I've been kinda peeking at "loaders", and was thinking, "Nahh!! I don't need no loader!" My thumb says otherwise... JohnB, Sounds like you had a ball!
I just finished re-loading 1000 rounds each of 9MM and .45 auto and I can tell you it is fun to do and you will shoot a lot more at two to three dollars a box than six or ten...We go out and shoot five hundred rounds apiece at a shooting session so I have to re-load. I really like an artillery or Navy with a stock. The Luger does need a firm grip. Did your Luger shoot where you were pointing? Jerry Burney |

My alter ego is Don Knotts, aka Barney Fife, when it comes to accuracy.... But yes, overall the bullets did come close to the tire I was using, perhaps 20-30 feet away...I had read that a Luger "shoots high", but mine went where I aimed. I noticed the "pop" was sharper than with my other 9 mike-mikes...perhaps this is a function of the toggle? Since it's not delayed as most are...anyway yes I did have lots of fun! |
The Luger actually has a longer delay before opening than most self loading pistols. The barrel pressure actually drops all the way to zero before it unlocks. If you fire it with out the extractor it will leave the empty case in the chamber.
My Lugers shoot where I point them. The problem is the discrepency between where I point them and where the target is. |
Come on guys. You need to do more shooting. My 3 Lugers all shoot 1.5" or smaller groups at 50 ft. bench rested. When I do my part offhand they shoot 3" groups. I don't rest until they are sighted in. You can drift over the front sight to correct for windage, but you have to lower the front sight nearly to the bottom of the rear sight notch or they shoot high at 50 ft. You can find better targets than old tires--beer or soft drink cans are about the right size, but they won't move much unless they are filled with sand.
