Luger - Broomhandle = Garand
Passed up a decent Erfurt @$750, and a rather used C-96 @$300 at a gunshow this weekend, to send off a $500 check for a CMP Garand. My concience finally got the best of me, I have all these "foreign" guns and not one USA representive. At my one gun a month allowance though I should be Erfurt and C-96 blessed by at least July.

Great philosophy Bob!
One gun a month seems like a moderate amount if you can afford it. After all, even the anti-gunners have pushed for legislation that would allow individuals to buy no more than one per month.
BTW, if you like military rifles, you won't be disappointed in the M1. I hope you are able to buy an Erfurt and C-96 soon. Those are on my want list too! |
OT: C96
I live in VA, and we can only buy 1 handgun/month.
I've been on the look out for a C96, any advice in what to look for? todd |

Re: Great philosophy Bob!
My wife "limits" my gun purchases and I humor her in that regard. After 46 years of putting up with my diversions, I owe her that. Good thing too, or my gun room would quickly become a gun house. European guns form the majority of my collection, and I suppose I will never be satisfied. BTW I just bought two of the "new" French MAS 49/56's, (Century Imports) semi-automatic and fun to shoot, compliment my MAS 36 and 36/51. Changing my attitude toward French weapons.

Re: Luger - Broomhandle = Garand
I received my CMP Garand, an IH type, a few months ago at the $400 price, and was sorely disappointed. About all you could say is that it was in firing condition, but a real horror to look at, with practically no finish and a stock which had as many dents as a golf ball. What a piece of junk! Was lucky to be able to get rid of it.

Re: Luger - Broomhandle = Garand
Yes Aaron, it's the luck of the draw with CMP, I have seen some really nice examples and a couple of duds. International Harvester was one of the rare ones though. Nothing really draws me to the Garand, it's just kind of a personal thing. I hope the enthusisiam comes when I finally receive it.

Re: Luger - Broomhandle = Garand
I just got my CMP Garand service grade. A 1944 Springfield
with a new condition 1951 Springfield barrel, I would rate it as NRA excellent. I had to replace the bullet guide, and tighten the trigger guard. I'm still working it up, but I have shot some 2" 100 yd groups with it. Good luck Bob. Mike Halbrook |
