Gentlemen


I,m wondering if it is sensible to store lugers in there holsters.It of course would not be a good plan to store rifles or shotguns in there scabbards,a formula for rusting.However,shotgun and rifle scabbards traditionally are lined in such a way as to hold in moisture.This does not seem to be the situation with luger holsters. Thanks for the advice!

I think any organic material, leather etc., is capable of holding moisture no matter how it is designed, and it would be my opinion that long term storage in a holster will ultimately lead to trouble.


Everyone on this forum swears by Clenzoil... a light coating of that, and only use the holster occasionally, and I think you'll be in great shape.

The chemicals used for tanning the leather can cause rust on pistol if stored for long periods of time. I have also seen Lugers stored for years in a holster with no ill effect, but I don't recommend it. If you must store the pistol in the holster, here is what I would do. Clean the pistol, wipe a good oil preservative such as Clenzoil, or RIG on the pistol and LOOSLY wrap in Saran Wrap. By loosly wraping it, it will still not trap any moisture. After wraping the pistol, it can be placed in the holster and not hurt the bluing. I do not stor my pistols in the holster, but I do keep the spare magazine and the tool in their approriate pouch. I also oil the mag or tool and wrap them before putting them away. Hope this helps and is my opinion from doing this for years with no problems.

I agree with Marvin - saw several guns stored in their holsters. After years of storage rust pits will appear on the surface - if you are interested, I can send you the picture of a Dreyse mod. 1907 of mine where you can see what will happen. The leather is treated with an acid material that will cause harm to the blueing and therefore will cause rust. Even if you oil, treat and wrap the gun, the acid will affect the blueing.


Therefore I don't store any of my guns in it's holster.

Most of the pitting damage you see on any pistol is due to it being stored in a holster. Just a good temperature change will cause the pistol to sweat, trapped in a holster the moisture causes damage very quickly.
