Hey ya'll ! I got a dumb question !

Lugers were built by the millions, right ? Broomhandles and P-38s (not counting post-war P-1s) were made in much less numbers - why do Lugers command such higher prices than the other two pistols ?

Carl 08-25-2002 11:03 PM

For the same reason that Colt's and Winchester's are highly desired, mystique.

wterrell 08-25-2002 11:04 PM

Half of the people in the world are female, but they are still very desirable.

Cecil,
The history of the luger pistol spans quite a few decades (about a century), couple of BIG WARS and saw use and service in many countries. Variations are numerous and provide many collecting categories. It is not a wonder the toggle top is so popular. The pistol is the simplist I have ever seen, it is graceful to hold in your hand and it's design is exquisite!!! I love the damn things like I love those 50% of Wes's women. LOL

I think that "millions" is a tad bit optomistic.

Edward Tinker 08-25-2002 11:27 PM

From Jones book, "approx 2 MILLION Lugers were producred by DWM and Erfurt during WW1... ...another 400,000 were produced during WW2"

And then count the commercial and I presume contract and I would say Millions is not an exageration.

Hey, ToggleTop,

Leave my half of the women alone.

ToggleTop 08-25-2002 11:33 PM

Hey Wes,
I meant all of the women, not 50% of them. Stupid mistake on my part. Of course at my age I can handle about 1/2 of 1. I guess we better change the subject!

Ed:

Still gives total production for WWI as approx 1,260,000, if I read the columns right. But when you add in Wiemar, WWII, commercial, etc., you definately are getting up there. Too close to make any difference. I stand corrected.

Edward Tinker 08-26-2002 12:12 AM

AND in MY hurry, I grabbed an old edition, so....

heh, heh, I thought I was wrong once, but it was a mistake...

If my references are correct, about 8 million Lugers were procuced. Why is the price so High?
Because dummies like us pay it! If gasoline was priced at $1.95 a gallon and nobody paid that price it would come down, price VS. demand, the old sales addage. If no one bought a Luger at any price, you would see the prices fall dramatically, but that probably won't happen, we'll still buy them, fakes and all , human nature, the fakers prey on that weakness.

Hey Guys,

The 1911 prices are also in the ballpark of the Luger prices. How many of these were made the last 90 years? Both are great guns and highly sought after, therefore costing considerable $$.

Kyrie 08-26-2002 05:21 PM

Hi Ichabod,

Collector grade C96ΓΆ??s generally sell for more than collector grade Lugers :-)

Warm regards,

Kyrie
