how do I identify my luger

My father-in-law recently passed. While cleaning out his bed room,I came across an old pad locked metal toolbox in the bottom of his closet. I rattled the box and figured it was just a few old tools. I thought nothing of this and took the box home. A couple of days had gone by and I became curious as to what was inside the metal box. I cut off the pad lock with a hacksaw and upon opening the box there was what appeared to be a german luger w/2 magazines and some old 9mm ammo. Can Someone help?

First and formost make sure it is "not loaded". If you do not know how take it to any gun shop and they will check for you.
Copy down any markings and serial numbers and post them. If you can please post pictures on the forum and the fine folks here will help you.

Cheers
Plano

Craig, Thank you. The luger was not loaded. The gun ser numb is 2049 letter suffix (a). do you know anything about lugers?

5star, to really help us, do as Russ stated, and read to your left. These are the kinds of things we need:

Can you tell us any markings on the gun?

Proofs? (see on your left under tech information if you came through www.lugerforum.com) Tell us what and where proofs and markings are located.

There are forms in this section, where you can print out and then write down pertinent information.

What serial number is on the gun? To include any letters next to or under the serial number?

What year or letters are stamped on the top of the receiver?

What initials or letters are on the toggle?

Can you provide pictures, to include side, top, etc?

And Brian, WELCOME to the forum. PS, I moved your topic to the discussions section, as it is easier for others to help you. You are in the right place, as the majority of people, such as Craig love lugers and are always willing to help,

Ed, thank you. I will take pictures of the toggle, gun barrel, and serial numbers of my luger and post them. Hopefully we can figure out what year the luger was manufactured and wether it saw military use or if it was commercial unit.

5Star,
Check to see if the magazines have serial numbers that match the gun. This can double+ the value. If they match, include good pictures of the serial numbers on the magazines. Thanks.
