OT Enigma Machine
My good friend and co-author [Germany] is having a 'garage sale' to pay for some newly acquired pistols!
Included is the ultimate WW-2 collectible! an ENIGMA MACHINE! [would you believe he had two?] It and much more is listed on EBAY...you can check under the seller's moniker of "Mod.HP". I will attest to his veracity and integrity. He is one of the world's top experts and collectors..........and one of my best friends! So, if you need a coding machine, here is your chance! I have trouble sometimes to understand my computer as it is.
To have an apparatus designed to do just that and nothing else scares me. -Artsi |

Okay, I am going very
When did the Enigma machine go from 3 wheels to 4 wheels ? (Date/Reason ?)The only photo I have seen in the past is a 4-wheel unit... Regards, Pete... |
Pete, These machines had a capability to put on and take off wheels. The Germans started out with one and eventually went to multiples. Some of the more complicated ones had more than four I think. The Poles copied the Enigma from a commercial model that was sold in Germany before the war and by the time the Germans invaded Poland they had a giant work shop think tank that was removed to England just in time to escape capture. It became a basis for breaking German codes. Time life produced a book on codes etc. That had a great article about this. Jerry Burney

John should buy both machines. After all, if you encrypt a message on one side of the office, you need something to decrypt it on the other side.

Hello Pete,
Enigma machines went to 4 rotors beginning of 1943. Allied were reading Enigma since end of 1942. Even with the 4 rotors Enigma, Allied were able to read it and know the approximate locations of U-Boats. Less successes against vessels prompted Donitz to establish WOLF PACKS of U-Boats....no big successes there too... Turning point of the U-Boat warfare came in summer 1943 when they became the game instead of being the hunter... Excellent books on the subjetc by author Blair... kidvett |
