More about this pistol in a bit...

Edward Tinker 03-03-2003 02:31 PM

Oh, thank goodness John! I thought you were going to show my 1942 Police Banner and that would have been embarrassing!! :D

The one shown is sure a beauty! :)

John D. 03-03-2003 07:16 PM

Wow - nice Police Banner..!!! Ed - do you have pics of yours stashed somewhere? If so - don't be bashful..!!! :)

Edward Tinker 03-03-2003 08:26 PM

I sent them to you via e-mail.

Cuz, they can't be shown in public, :D

John Sabato 03-04-2003 07:45 AM

Ed, I am holdin' out on posting those photos in public until I have a good reason for extortion :D

Edward Tinker 03-04-2003 10:51 AM

Once she is finished, I will post before and after...

And never do this again :D (at least for a looooong time). Ted and Heinz have been giving me tips and hints, so we'll see

...and Here is the story to go with this Luger.

Last week I was approached by a Tennessee municipal law enforcement agency who has received a donated Luger from an elderly widow who told them that she no longer wanted it in the house and would appreciate it if they could take it put it to good use. She said that her late husband had brought it home from WW2, and that he had been part of unit that had liberated concentration camps, and that he took the gun from a german who no longer needed it...but other than that, he would not talk about his war exploits. To her knowledge he never fired the gun after it came home.

The police department would like to sell it and use the money to buy a new (digital) evidence camera and accessories... and asked if I could help them place a reasonable value on the gun. It is a Mauser Banner Police -1942 an the serial number is 3240y.

The gun has a very small amount of surface rust that is revealed by the photos and has TWO matching extruded magazines. The barrel is described as pristine which is suprising since ammunition of the era was corrosive. It is possible that this Luger was never fired after it's last cleaning during the war. There is no suffix letter on the barrel. There is a small mark on the left grip, but otherwise this is a fine looking gun and magazines. The holster is also part of the package, but it is not in very good shape by the appearance in the photo. If an additional photo of the holster would help, I am sure they can take a couple for me...

I inquired of several of our members for their impression of the value of this Luger. I have forwarded their opinions to the police department to make a decision on the selling price...

Jan C. Still was kind enough to provide this information on the gun... I have edited out his estimate of the value to give the police department the widest latitude in setting the selling price.
===========================
From Jan C. Still:

Your police dept. has a:

1942 Mauser Banner police, serial number 3240y, Eagle/L stamped on the right receiver, with two matching blued Haenel Schmeisser (stainless steel center pinned) magazines numbered 1 & 2, complete with a poor condition black police holster.

The condition is about 90% blue with freckling and pitting on the back. It is in very good condition. Or as most dealers would describe it: excellent plus to mint condition except for the freckling and pitting in the lanyard area. ( LOL as I read this part! :D )

...This example in very good condition ... (The two matching magazines are a big plus but its hard to tell how much the freckling and pitting would detract from its value without examining the
Luger.)

Note: approximately 25,000 police Lugers were manufactured by Mauser between 1938 and 1942. About 500 are reported. Of these 5,500 were produced in 1942. In short, itâ??s a rather common police Luger.

I hope this is of help. I would be interested in the realized price.

Jan C. Still

========

If you are interested in owning this Luger, it will ONLY be transferred to FFL dealers or valid C&R license holders... keep your eye on the For Sale forum for the announcement about the method of sale.

Additional photographs (primarily of the holster and one new shot of the back of the gun where the rust was/is) have been posted in the Member Gallery for those interested in this rig. The holster is not quite as bad as the initial photo indicated... This police holster was made in 1917. Photo #27 has a good view of the maker mark if you look at it full size.

Here is another preview to whet your appetite for this rig... that will go on sale soon.

Very sweet, do they give "police" discounts? A couple of us guys on the forum would qualify,

I have just received word that the City Auditor for the police department that has this Luger has decided that the gun must be sold by sealed bids. The bids will have to be sent via snail mail. More information as I receive it. Watch our 'For Sale' Forum for the announcement of the sealed bid sale...

and Ed? No discount... I just think its great that they came to us for help and our members get the opportunity to bid.

John Sabato 03-05-2003 04:38 PM

Twenty-one additional really good photographs of this pistol have just been added to the album in the Member Gallery...

This pistol looks better all the time. If it were mine, it would NOT be for sale...

Here is one of the new photographs...

Looks a heck of a lot better now that they have taken the time to clean it, doesn't it?!! By the way, I think that spot on the left grip is verdigris from the holster and should brush off with a tooth brush.

John Sabato 03-05-2003 05:07 PM

I just added more photos of the magazines. There are now 61 total photographs of this Luger and accessories in the Member Gallery album... this should be plenty for anyone to decide if they want to bid.

For those interested, this Luger and it's accesories have just been posted in the For Sale forum using a sealed bid type auction by the city of Belle Meade Tennessee. All information is contained in the for sale ad.

Information regarding this auction is being carried by the Lugerforum as a public service, all proceeds from the sale of this Luger will go directly to the city treasury.

Good Bidding!

John Sabato 04-03-2003 11:58 AM

Just to close the loop on this interesting Luger and story...

The sealed bids were opened by the Belle Meade Tennessee Police Department on March 28, 2003.

The lowest bid was $1100 by a local resident.

The winning bid was an amazine $2725.00

...by a resident of Georgia who is apparently not a member of this forum, and he purchased the gun for his private collection and not for resale.

Jimbo 04-05-2003 09:01 PM

Thanks for the conclusion. I was wondering how much it would go for. That seems like a reasonable price.

I'm so glad this didn't get melted down like it would have been in Chicago or San Francisco!

Lonnie Zimmerman 04-05-2003 11:45 PM

They melt them down in Portland, Oregon, too! What a shame.
Lonnie

John Sabato 04-07-2003 10:41 AM

Well I am not sure if they melt down guns used in crimes in Tennessee, but this particular gun was turned in by an elderly lady whose late husband had captured and she gave explicit instructions that it was to be used for a good purpose...

So some collector in GA has a great new addition to his collection, and the Belle Meade Police Department will soon have a completely new Crime Scene camera rig...to help put away the bad guys...

and they lived happily ever after :)

stymie 04-07-2003 11:28 AM

WOW.... I have #3110y & an Otto Sindel police holster, both in mint/99%+ condtion. I have two FXO mags... sure wish I had the *correct* ones. (...still shopping for a user friendly digital camera!)

Edward Tinker 04-07-2003 12:43 PM

Stymie, I have several digital cameras (an el-cheapo one, then a Kodak that is 3 years old and just got a new one before the trip), and I am really happy with the Sony I just got, it is a CD-250, takes nice close ups, nice further away, although it likes plenty of light for nice closeups. Easy to use, others that have Sonys report that they like them.

A cheap one you will always regret, so it seems that anything over $300 and up, is a nice one, and then for most uses, up to $500 is a good one to buy? I imagine if you are looking for studio quality, then buy a more expensive one, but the mid-range is a good camera for our uses?

Just my 2 cents,

Ed
