GT's magazine tool

<img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" /> I just got thru reworking four magazine shells with my new tool from GT. It worked great. I now have four more magazines that were worthless before. That more than paid for the cost of the tool! <img border="0" alt="[jumper]" title="" src="graemlins/jumper.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[jumper]" title="" src="graemlins/jumper.gif" />

I also installed three of his new mag springs. Havent had a chance to shoot the mags in a gun yet, but let me tell you, those buggers are STOUT! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

Just received my modified magazine mandrel from GT this morning. I have tested it on 3 different metal tubes with complete success. It is still snug, but that's the way you want it. I use a little BreakFree CLP on the tool when inserting, making it a little easier to remove after the repair is completed.

My thanks to GT for an excellent tool.

Luke

Thanks Guys! For the great feedback! The tools you fellas have now, are as dimensionally correct as we could make them.. there will be no more dimensional changes from here on out.. It is ironic in that this was the spec we had decided on, and then changed it at the last minute to make it a "little more snug" fit.... now, we are back to our original size... These tools will work on fxo type shells also, as well as the after-market shells... It is amazing what can be done with a little effort, and a small selection of hammers, punches & plates... I have seen some pretty rough mags come back from near death, and fit and function fine after a little tapping and squeezing... Thanks Hugh, Luke & Jerry, for the kind words! Till...later....GT

GT:

Used your mag tool today on three mags. Prior to rework you couldn't drive them into a Luger. Now they slide in like they are on rollers. I am extremely PLEASED with the tool, you did a great job on them. If only there was an easy way to remove the mag buttons?

Thats great Ken! I have considered a fixture for removing the follower button, on a really nice mag, it is always a bit tricky! I have used a small piece of steel with a slot in it,that goes inside the follower for support, but sometimes the large dia. of the pin is tight and deforms the follower & the shell on the far side anyway! I have, on occasion cut the follower button off to save the shell, and replaced it with another after the repair..... Thanks again to all for the great feedback! Thanks Ken! till...later....GT

Ken, proper way to remove/install PO8 mag follow buttons is as follows: Remove mag bottom, spring & guide. Move follower to bottom of empty tube, it will then line up with hole in right side of mag. Lay mag on a special alum block, cut out to shape of left side of mag with hole for the button to lay in. Pin punch out button thru hole in mag. TH

JR/Lugerdoc:
Thanks for the input. I have been using a vise with four inch jaws slightly open with moderate success. The alum block sounds like the solution, but probably beyond my skills with file.

Regarding GT's mag tool. Could someone let me know how to contact him?

Thanks Brent B.

Look in the forum below "Lugers, Parts & Accessories for Sale". GT (posts under the alias JR) has only one of his original run of mag tools left, but is gearing up to make some more. Go to his post "P.08 Mag. mandrel/tool for sale..." and send him a private message.

Hello GT,

Since you have access to a machinist who is obviously talented, I wonder if there would be any interest in "special aluminum blocks" described by Lugerdoc, Tom Heller, in the above post and quoted again below.

"Lay mag on a special alum block, cut out to shape of left side of mag with hole for the button to lay in." - - - Lugerdoc.

I would definitely be interested if the cost were as reasonable as your other products have been.

Anyone else?

Luke

No interest by anyone else ?

Oh, well. I thought it was a good idea.

G.T. 10-18-2003 10:41 AM

Hi Luke! Well, if no one is interested, and judging by past responses, then it must be a good idea! I'll look into it an see what can be done, Thanks again for your support and business! And ideas! Till...later.....GT

Once you use this, you'll appreciate the craftsmanship-just as you do in a Luger! I had it for about an hour before I just had to dig up a crapped out mag to try it on, man is it sweet! Great job GT. Thanks for sharing! The springs also look great.

Hugh 10-20-2003 12:28 AM

Well Luke, I would be interested in one a them blocks too!

Brent B. 10-26-2003 09:43 AM

A big thanks to G.T. for his mag tool. He's great to deal with and I've already fixed 4 mags that I thought were goners.

Just a thought:

Perhaps it's possible to make the tool a multi-function one by adding a drilled hole so that it can also be used for removing the button?

Frank H 10-29-2003 05:30 PM

JR A patient saw the tool and asked me to contact you. Can you make a tool for a Mauser 98K bayonet scabbard? He could really put that to the test! See what you started!

G.T. 10-30-2003 04:19 PM

Hi Frank! Not a bad idea! I would need a sample of the type/style/maker of scabbard he is thinking about! And, I would need to do some research on commonality.... interesting idea... till....lat'r...GT
