Report on Blue Wonder Gun Cleaner

Got mine in today and tried it on some mag release buttons, a sideplate, and a shooter frame.

This product is a 'cleaner" and not a "stripper"; it will not leave your gun or parts shiny white. It removes the surface rust but still leaves some discoloration where heavy rusting was.

I applied it as the instructions indicated by putting a little of the gel on the part and then rubbing with 0000 steel wool. It did not remove or affect the rust bluing and the strawing! In fact in a couple of cases it revealed faint strawing that was not evident under light surface rust.

Below are pictures of "before" (on left) and "after" ( on right) of some mag release buttons and a sideplate treated with Blue Wonder.

As you can see, the remaining strawing on one button and the rust bluing on the sideplate was not removed.

After cleaning with the BW, I could still see traces of brown in the bluing in some places on the frame and sideplate under magnification and "Maglighting". <img border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" title="" src="graemlins/bigok.gif" />

Dwight, I don't know about this test. Where would Hugh get parts that were not chromed?

The Maglight test involves shining a bright light onto a gun's blued surface to illuminate its deep characteristics. Rust bluing (particularly) develops a brownish character (a rusting phenomenon) over time, which is only visible under extremely bright light. A blued surface which does not exhibit this color has been blued relatively recently. (The Simichrome test reveals the same characteristic in a different manner.)

Its called the Maglight test because a small Maglightâ?¢ flashlight is convenient to carry around--say, at a gun show--to make this examination. I wondered if Blue Wonder Gun Cleaner altered the rust characteristic.

There has been more than one discussion about both the Maglight and Simichrome tests here on this forum, a search should reveal them.

Dwight, I have wondered about this, lets say I cleaned the heck out of the gun, would the maglight test not work then?

Seriously, however, Dwight's explanation of the mag light test was first class for anyone who did not know about this important "trick" Maybe John Sabato can post it in the technical information section.

To follow my friend Wes' candor, I confess to knowing a woman, many, many years ago, who said she owned an armadillo. The way she described it, it was this funny lookin' thing that she put batteries in and she said it was like a boyfriend in a box.

Never did figger that out.

Back about 20 years ago when I lived in Florida, the authorities caught a so-called "wild man" who was living native in the Everglades. Turned out he was an escaped crew member from a Chinese ship which had docked at one time in South Florida; spoke no English; and led a basic, survival existance.

Seems he was living off armadillos and wild fruit.

Have we strayed from the "Blue Wonder Gun Cleaner" subject . . . or what?

Tom Armstrong! You are a piece of work! I have, of late, spent a good deal of time in Arkansas and Oklahoma where the Armadildo is as common as 'possums are here. The "boyfriend in a box" line shall get a real workout these next couple of months.

Dwight, thanks for the explanation of the maglight test. I would be intersted in hearing the results of that test with a gun blued with our Blue Wonder Gun Blue. It is very difficult to tell if a gun has been reblued with our product as it leaves no odor and matches existing bluing very well. Please let me know if you have any results on this.

I wonder what you'd get if you crossed a Texas armadillo with an Alabama possum? That would be one damn ugly critter. Be able to climb and dig, be loud and talk slow, live under houses that play country music, bows its head when it hears dixie, eat hot peppers and live in a cotton patch, its gait would be a cross between a Texas two step and Tennessee waltz, and would scavenge garbage cans for beer. Still wouldn't be able to cross a two lane though. Something to think about
