Chrome Removal

I just bought a really nice 1912 Erfurt #735 b that is all matching, less mag of course, but it is lightly chrome or nickel plated. I want to get this finish off of it. Would anyone know of a source that does this work? I prefer the process known as Anodic stripping which is electrochemical rather than bead or sand blasting. I've burned two quarts of 20/50W oil in my search engine looking for a source with no luck, any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Herb

Herb, I searched on Oveture.com OVETURE.COMACCURATE PLATING Seach under "plating removal"

Doug, thanks, I'll give them a call to see if they want to take on a Luger. They do stripping but don't really specify the method used. I want the numbers and little proof marks to remain clear and crisp and am concerned that blasting will remove the remaining detail that has already suffered from the nickel/chrome plating.

Herb:

I have had some experience with items (not lugers) from which I have had nickel plateing removed. Assuming that the marks/stamps on your pistol were in good shape when the plating was applied, neither the plating process nor its removal should result in harm to the markings or the metal. That assumes you use the electrochemical process to remove the plating. Using a method that employs an abrasive technique should be avoided for the reasons that you have stated. This has been my experience, in any event.

Good Luck

Herb:

Almost forgot. You might wish to take a look at this site: www.craftguard.com. They are located in Waterlou, IO. Their price list indicates that they will electronically remove old plating from a pistol for $36.00.

I have had no previous experience with these folks.

thanks Garfield... this is a frequently asked question. If anyone should have a pistol stripped of plating by this firm, please report the results back to the forum...
