toggle pin repair

The main toggle pin (toggle to receiver) has a small head on it. About 1/4 of the head has broken off.

What causes this?

It appears the luger will work fine in this condition?

Since this is a numbered part could the head be built up with weld and then turned down to size on a lathe?

50 plus years of age with stress cracks from supporting toggle operations... (sounds like a description of ME!)

Sure you could repair it... and it would still be matching numbers but it would also be REPAIRED or ALTERED... not original... and since it already had stress cracks it will probably fail again after the repair!

I would just get yourself a replacement axle for shooting and keep the original one As-Is.

It appears the head is only there to simplify assembly. It provides a stop to align the pin so the receivers slide together without interfering. I'm wondering if some other problem put forces on the head causing the failure.

I appreciate the "collector" view point but this is a shooter that is about to be refinished.
