How do you straw color a part?

was wondering how is it done?

John Sabato 02-15-2004 12:14 PM

Do a "search" (Link is at the top right of the page" in THIS Restoration and Refinishing Forum for "straw"... somewhere in the listings you will find several discussions on methods for strawing.

If you want it professionally done, I recommend you get in touch with Thor...

Just very quickly and to oversimplify, the polished part is heated to around 400 degrees F, which causes it to darken to a golden yellow or "straw" color. It takes a fair bit of skill to keep from over-heating and getting the part too dark, or getting an uneven color because of the varying thicknesses of metal in the part. Now do a search and see what the experts had to say.

Hello Chung,

Here is a bit of info. from Harry Jone's book, "Luger Variations" on page 52 :

<a href="http://forums.lugerforum.com/lfupload/h_jones_straw_info.jpg" target="_fullview"><img src="http://forums.lugerforum.com/lfupload/h_jones_straw_info.jpg" width="400" alt="Click for fullsize image" /></a>

I recall LF member Policeluger mentioning this some months back...

I worked with Harry Jones years ago, if you will email your internet address I will attach an easy step by step guide to strawing. I have had several very nice feedbacks from folks who have wanted to learn this near fool proof method, tried it and loved it. One reported back just the other day how easy it was, following my instructions, and how much fun he was having doing all sorts of small gun parts.

policeluger, unless the process you have is copyrighted, why not write it up as an article complete with photos and I will create a page under 'technical information" naturally crediting the source... :)

Strider 02-17-2004 02:31 PM

Policeluger, add me to the list also. I'm with Viggo, I still have lots to learn and the desire to do so. <img border="0" alt="[jumper]" title="" src="graemlins/jumper.gif" /> My email address is sgariss@bhinc.com.
Thanks.
Sid.

John, nothing I have passed out is copyrighted, and from my side I would like too pass this out along with a free and open note to all that I will email as much extra help as one may need. There is at the bottom of my directions, a note that I do this in my shop for $85, but would rather the do-it yourselfer try if they so wish. No one to date has sent me parts to straw from LF and that is just fine...but several have noted to me how well it works, and eazy to, I will clean up my notes, make it a little more profesional and send it along to you to do as you wish and to post on LF...to the LF members above, hang tight a copy is now on is way to you....after this, gun bluing by email:)...

Hey policeluger! Lem'me see if I have this straight?? If I use your method for restrawing .... can I charge you more for a Luger that I sell to you??... or, do I have to pay you for restrawing it myself!! :) :) JUST KIDDING!!! I hope you've been happy with the Lugers sent thus far?? I sure have enjoyed the interaction to date! best to you, til....lat'r....GT

policeluger 07-25-2004 10:14 PM

G.T. 07-25-2004 10:37 PM

Hi policeluger! Nope! I could burn water! :) I'll leave the color changes to the experts! I've been searching for some more unusual P.08's for ya... no luck this week... best to you, til...lat'r...GT

Apostolos 07-26-2004 07:01 PM

Howard, thank you very much for these directions.I wanted this list just in case, for my records.I will not try to do anything with the M1900 Bul.I am afraid of John Sabato to excommunicate me!JUST KIDDING.

policeluger 07-26-2004 07:29 PM

John no longer has this power....the worst that can happen here is he will require you to send him this Luger for safe keeping....good luck

FWIW, I noticed that 304 Stainless can also be strawed. The temperature may be slightly different than that of regular steel.

I discovered this by accident while working on my stainless stock iron.
