Luger Deactivation???
 

Started on a 1918 DWM last night, the darn breech block has a big blob of what appears to be some type of soldier on the outside over the firing pin hole. I assume this was to deactivate it. Anybody ever see this before? The more I work on these guns, the crazier things I see. This was the same Luger that was missing the hold open device, the trigger and spring, the take down lever and spring, and the entire side plate assembly. Other than that a totally matching and righteous Luger. "What the hey?" :confused:

In many European countries, strict gun laws mean that one can only keep certain guns that are rendered useless in quite crude manners. Over here in the Netherlands, a side arm like the Luger may only be owned by someone without a gun permit if it has been split in half... Certain rifles may be owned if they are completely welded shut, the barrel has been perforated at 3 positions and a metal rod is welded into the mouth of the gun. Other European countries allow people to own 'decoration weapons' if the firing mechanism is completely destroyed.

Here in Cedar Rapids we have the case of the widow who used the police loaner buzzer engraver to mark her husband's P38 collection.

I have a 1909 Colt New Service chambered for the 1909 Colt 45 cartridge (Not the same as the 45 Colt). This revolver has a mirror bright bore, very rare, all matching in nice shape. Too bad some one saw fit to reblue it, engine turn the hammer and checker the original matching grips. There were only a tad over 2000 of these made, almost all saw service in the Philippine Insurrection and are viewed as a very desirable collector's item. The majority have next to no bore left. As is, this thing is worth around $600. What would it be worth in the original? $2000 ?

Oh well, I can console myself with my rare all original officer's model nickle plated Parabellum. (Yes, it's original. As far as I can tell it has only been nickle plated once.)

Nice sounding gun, I don't mind if they have been messed with back then (prefer them not messed with), as it was just a gun that Bob Smith bought back then, decided to make it nice by the hammer work, etc., on it.

Please... don't even start with the story of the Officer's initials being engraved on the toggle (DWM)...

WOW, just think of how much more valuable it would be if it would have had the rare presentation plastic mother of pearl grips, with a swastika and the initials AH on them...

A true dream find of the 21st Century...

This could have been done in this country when GI's brought pistols back through New York. The NYC authorities told the returning heroes that they would be arrested when they stepped onto the Sacred Sullivan Soil if they didn't allow their pistols to be deactivated. Most considered this to be much like the Nazism they had been fighting and ignored the American Hitlers, but some did actually submit their guns for welding. I have seen two Lugers, a Mauser C96 and a Radom that were given "the treatment" at the NY POE (BART).

Well, got this Luger up and running, checked head space and headed for the range, had to replace the EXTRACTOR also, it had a burr of weldmetal melted into it. This gun fired a 1" group at 25 yds (dont tell JD, he will accuse me of the "pencil treatment") It is ready to rock and roll now! lol
