Snail Drum Question

I need to get up to speed on snail drums for the luger...can anyone point me to the best reference material on them. Also I understand there have been reproductions made...any pointers on the fine points of telling the real from the new?

Ken 114; I have never seen a reproduction snail drum that held 32 rounds. I have seen some great reproductions, but they only held 7 or 8 rounds.

Lonnie is dead on. There are no known examples of fake trommel magazines; I guess because the profit margin would be so small.

Ed Sayre of Fayetteville NC has a book in the works that deals almost exclusivly with the TM. Ed knows as much about TM's as Luke does about 1911 DWM's!! Ed's book is scheduled to go into print early this summer. Buy Ed's book and you'll know more about TM's than anyone should know about anything.

George; is he the fellow looking for serial numbers for the snail drum? If so, I have one if you or him are interested in the serial number.

Lonnie, if you'll post it I will pass it on to Ed.

The only "repro" snail drums that I've ever seen were the 7rders made in Japan for the non-firing repros from Collectors Armoury. These a slightly wider than an original and will not fit into the orig mag well without some rework and even then the springs were so weak, that I doubt that they would feed. These were made for display purposes only and their markings and quality is not easily mistaken for an original. Tom H.

Hello!

Sorry I was out for a while...

Tom is absolutely right on repro snail drums: They are for display only. The one I have can hold a few cartridges ( 5-6 ) & fits poorly in the mag well ( a bit tight in there ). Most are of the TYPE B variant.

Following Forum users advices & after a lot of shopping I bought a NIKON CoolPIX 4500 Digital camera. I learning how to use it...

I'll try to post PICS of that repro snail drum...
