Luger 32 Round Magazine
 

Although I had never seen a real one before, I recognized a second issue 32 round snail drum magazine complete with its leather carrier. The owner was puzzling over what caliber ammunition would fit it. He said he could not get Luger cartridges in it. I told him there were two calibers, 7.65 and 9mm. He called later to tell me the 7.65 worked fine in the snail drum. He only has a 9mm Luger. It looked like either cartridge should have worked in the snail drum but I could not get my hands on it to check. Who can advise me about this including what a fair cost might be.

Both calibers should fit in the drum... if 9mm doesn't fit, then it may not be a genuine drum, but rather a reproduction drum that will only hold a few rounds... the drum part won't function at all on the repros.

Authenitic drums vary in price depending on condition and who wants them. I have seen them sell for as little as $550.00 to as much as $1200.00 over the last two years. To properly use the "Trommelmagazine" TM-08 it requires a loading tool that will also run several hundred dollars.

The other two objects in this photo are a dust cover, and an adapter for an early MP-18/28 Schmeisser submachine gun that also used this magazine.

Check Gunbroker.com and AuctionArms.com because I think there are a drum and a loading tool being offered at this time on one or the other.

I was at a gunshow Sunday in Longview, Washington and there was one of the reproductions which only held the standard number of rounds and the man wanted $350.00 for that one. It looked good.

There was a Luger drum selling on Sturmgewehr.com a few weeks ago. I think the seller wanted $1,200 (I think). Don't know if it sold or not. Looks pretty interesting to have as an accessory.

With reference to John's image of an original Trommel magazine, dust cover and loader, I would like to show you how a genuine second model Trommel magazine carrier. For your information, the carriers were not made out of leather, but instead canvas, and this accessory is extremely rare.

Furthermore, if you are curious to know, a 1924 P. Von Frantzius, Chicago dealer catalog had the following accessories priced as follows:

Second Model Snaildrum - $7.50
Snaildrum Loader - $6.50
Screwdriver loading tool - $0.20
Original brass cleaning rod with grease reservoir (overall length 7") - $0.50

Don't we wish we could buy these items at those prices! Those were the good old days!

This was for four in the floor, no automatic anything, manual choke, and a crank for when the battery was low,(most of the time), Hand operated windshield wipers, just coming out from the gas lite era, ice boxes, wood and coal fired stoves, no central heat or cooling,WHAT WAS SO GOOD ?

Been there. Clapboard house on concrete blocks. Did not have an outhouse until I was 8 years of age. No running water in the house until I was 12. Dirt roads in the backwoods.
Resented the conditions for years. I now realize that those were, indeed, the good old days.
