Cleaning Rod Question...
 

Just wondering if original & authentic cleaning rods for LP-08's should have their wooden "beer barrel drum" handles turn/swivel on the metal rods or not ? Same question for the shorter version that was used with 6" Navy guns...

If the handle does not swivel, does this necessarily means the tool is a "repro" or were a variation of tools made/issued...?

Thanks for helping me out. In Bender's larger book, there are some good photos on pages 297-302 that do seem to show metal ferruls through which the rod is inserted and this allows the swiveling action...

I have also posted, below, the nice schematic diagram which shows the detailed design of an LP-08 cleaning rod. This is from page 227 on E. Bender's book, "Luger Hosters & Accessories From The 20th. Century".

If any LF members would like a high-resolution copy of this drawing, I will post one in the Member's Gallery....

I've got a 'swiveling' one with a slightly smaller barrel (2 rings on each side) with a rodlength that matches the LP08 rod length.

Posted a pic of it some months ago.

Two pictures extracted from my book (page 54). They describe the different cleaning rod configuration. The first model has both the bottom and the handle ring made in tinplate to prevent damage to the bore while cleaning. In the last production the tinplate was eliminated. There is also an intermediate model where only the bottom was manufactured using the tinplate.

I don't know about anyone else but I don't think that I would want to stick one of these cleaning rods down the barrel of one of my artilleries. It seems like it would badly scratch the barrels bore. Maybe I am missing something about applying a cloth or something. :confused:

sorry but I have translated the Italian word "ottone" with tinplate instead of the correct term â??brassâ?�. Please replace tinplate with brass in my previous descritpion.
