Strange Date Stamp

I have been offered a matching DWM artillery Luger in decent shape. However, it was originally dated 1916, but the 6 has been very neatly overstamped with a number 8, making the date appear to look like 1918. Serial is 1782 with no suffix. Only the rear sight is fine tuned. It has a wood bottom non-matching mag with an incorrect blued tube. Has anyone seen anything like this? I will try to get some pictures and post them.

It is very strange that the date has been overstamped. In any case the LP08 produced in the 1918 have not neither the front nor the rear tuning sight.

Mauro is correct. The 1918 should not have either front or rear sight adjustible. The 1917's could have any combination and the 1916's should have both front and rear sights adjustible. I can not remember if the rear sight should have a two digit serial number under it. It seems that this has come up before on the forum. The adjustible tang sight should have the appropriate two digit serial number on its right side.

The chamber over stamp of the date looks like some hanky panky. Why someone would take the time to ruin a gun like that is beyond me.

Hello,
In the picture attached (available at page 45 of my book) the rear adjustable sight. As you can see the rear sight is numbered with the last two digits (on the left). It is possible to meet also the tangent sight numbered on the top right. Also the cursor is numbered on the right side.

Mauro,
I just checked my chamber dated 1914 DWM (serial #7754). You are right. Your eyes and camera work are really good. Those numbers are very small.

Hello people
I'm sorry but I've to correct you all.
It is possible to find some 1918 LP08 with the fine tuning front sight and the non-fine tuning rear sight.I've seen one,and you can look at page 107-108 of Imperial Lugers.
