the winner is an Italian friend of mine. I don't know if he is a forum member. In any case, right now, he doesn't participate in our discussions.
You can see a lot of his beauties in my book. He gave me a lot of pictures and help.

Actually he has one of most complete collections I have ever seen.

I will meet him in August when I come back to Italy for vacation.

This guy is a big reference for me and I hope I convince him to participate in the Luger Forum discussions.

I considered this rig and got some pictures of it from the seller. As Ron said, the leather was condition, condition, condition. But I passed on it. My reasons were (1) The unit stampings were inked stamped on the inside of the holster. I prefer to have it embossed on the outer rear. Ink stampings just don't hold up over time and wear. I feel that I have a better chance of personnaly authenticifying an embossed date and unit marking. Anybody can make an ink stamp. (2) Pictures that I received from the seller of the stocks proofmark were not clear enough to show that it was authentic. Finally, (3) I did not receive a picture of the serial number on the attaching iron.

At the price that authentic artillery holsters and stocks go for, I want to feel comfortible with my purchase, especially when I am dealing with a foreign seller. I'll wait until something that I am more sure of comes along.

I hope that the purchaser proves me wrong and believes that he got a bargain. A true artillary holster with all the attaching leather and an authentic stock is a good find. If so, on this purchase, then the guy got a good buy.

Norm, your reservations are justifiable when dealing with unknown persons and you're unable to inspect the item yourself.

I recently engaged in an exchange of e-mails concerning a Luger and backed off when I felt that the information being offered was a little too coy. I asked for pictures and what I received were worthless for evaluation purposes. I asked about bore condition and was told that the gun shot accurately. The Luger was reportedly refinished but all markings were described as sharp so I asked how badly the sharp edges were rounded from the buffing and the reply didn't mention anything about buffing or if any corners had been rounded. At that point I replied that I was no longer interested. My questions were expicit but the answers were not, offering nothing upon which a good decision could be made.

you were right in passing. Blurred pictures, inadequate answers, glarey photos and just a plain hunch are good reasons to move on. Patience is important when developing a collection. There will always be something else coming along that will strike your fancy. Its easy to get carried away on these auctions. Its expensive to even return articles. You have little recourse if you get a bummer of a seller in a foreign land.

This guy got $937 for his rig. It may be actually a good rig. For a little more effort on his part, he may have gotten more. I really just had a hunch and passed.
