My first Artillery , With new duds!!
 

Well, here it is ! My first artillery. Not very impressive, but it's mine, bought and paid for! A 1916 Dated DWM Ser#282. All matching, including grips, and hold-open.Adjustable front and rear sights. A couple of rough spots. Minor pits on front bands. One tiny spot on frame.Some one has tried to take pits out of side plate and cold blue it. Bore is frosty, but with good strong rifling. Mag unnumbered, but correct style and era.

Just added photos of repro stock. Courtesy of George Anderson. Re-finished and aged it. And fitted locking cam bolt. Added repro grips(for shooting),also courtesy of Mr Anderson. Now if I can dig up a holster at Reno. It'll be time to buy another Luger!! Ron

I picked up my "dream" artillery and she was buffed bad and reblued, but hey, I can say I have one and still do, my only artillery btw. Although a friend has a "police" model I want... Now who was that? :D

Ron, Congratulations! 1916 is a desirable year. I want to warn you though...Now you need all the extras, Stock, straps, and boot, Holster, cleaning rod, tool and sight sdjuster. You aren't done yet!

Another small caution, I had just bought one like this and while at the range the numbered extractor broke and a chip came out of the left grip. If it is truely all matching you may want to consider changing out a part or two before running too many rounds thru it. I thought for many years Lugers were hard to break but since then, many parts and I have parted company. It is much more common than one would think. Thanks Guys! I feel like I did when I was 9, and on Christmas there was'nt anything under the tree for me. I knew we were poor, but! My dad looked at me and said ,"Oh, I think I left yours in the garage!" I ran out, opened the garage,and there sat the most beautiful Chinese red, with chrome fenders,Schwinn bicycle I had ever seen.
This is the first time I've felt this good.Since they handed me my ship-out orders from Vietnam. And I was still alive and I was'nt leaking.

Yes I am! The Jack Rabbits in eastern Oregon are really thick this year. Ain't nothin' like poppin at a flat scootin' Jack Rabbit,with a handgun .
I don't actually shoot them, I just shoot at them. "Keep's em frum gittin uppity!" Or is that hoppity? There may be some collateral damage, but
I guess they shoulda been flat scootin' alittle faster!!

I tried that in the desert outside of Las Vegas about 35 years ago. We saw quite a few of the hoppers until we got out of the car and loaded up with guns and ammo. Then nothing for about 2 hours as we walked around (not too quietly). We did ventilate some threatening beer cans to get the guns warmed up. Finally, we gave up, unloaded, and got back in the car. When the car started to move, the Jacks exploded from everywhere. I guess they have to be flushed out of the brush. Never had another chance to try it again.

Yeah, If they think there's anything close, they'll hunker under a bush. You have to go out and just zig-zag around. When you flush one! They just explode. You've got to be fast. That's why I said, I just shoot at them. For the most part, that's about all you can do. But, man! It is fun!!The best time is just after sun-up, or about the last 3 hrs before sun-down. If it's cloudy or overcast, it can last all day.

Were do you go? Cristmas Vally? I saw some photos from back in the 70's of a rabit hunt there. they had piles of them. Thats when you could get 70.00 for a coyote fur. needles to say there were a lot of naked coyotes. <img border="0" alt="[hiha]" title="" src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" />

Congrat's Ron Smith... Don't feel bad about the condition... it looks WAY better than my only Artillery... (see the Old Owner's Corner in the folder under my name...)

...and it is a WHOLE LOT BETTER than Many of the other 2000 members of this forum who don't have one... :( I will bet they are rightly envious...

enjoy it and then leave it to you heirs in working condition... I feel privileged to own mine, and you are too!

BTW, I paid $100.00 for mine in 1974 INCLUDING a Haenel Schmeisser extruded police magazine (not matching of course but it is one of the best magazines ever made)... for another $25.00 I could have owned the stock, but this young soldier (at the time) didn't have the money...

Russ, Yes, we go through Christmas Valley past the old Radar station, and go south through Poverty Basin. If you've seen "The Mountain Men" where Charlton Heston says"Why would anybody want to go to Aurigon fer? Won't nothin' grow thar!" He was talking about Poverty Basin.
Once you get through Poverty Basin, in a good year, they'll be running everywhere.Just don't shoot near any range cows. Your on ZX range land, and them ZX Buckaroos don't like you scarin' ther Moo cows. Besides the range cattle are wild and mean. Russ did you send me a PM? I checked it, did'nt see anything. Ron

John, Thanks for the boost. It helps with the twinge of buyers remorse I was suffering from. Over it, and happy now. I scrubbed the barrel with J&B bore cleaner. It removed the scale. The bore is shiny and bright with just a bit of frost. If you've never used J&B? I highly recommend it for cruddy bores. :D

...just don't mistake JB-Weld for that bore cleaner mentioned by Ron Smith... that could be fatal for your Luger :D

JB bore cleaner is good but you need to be very careful if you clean from the muzzle end not to rub the one side of the muzzle, dont do that if you dont have to. It is a mild abrasive paste. I have used it with good success especially in breaking in a new rifle barrel. I have had a lot of Jack Rabbit hunting experience in NM.

Very true! May end up with a bit of a nasty recoil problem. Not to mention some "parts" for sale. That's J&B BORE CLEANER!!!

Thor, in my experience a better product for breaking in a new bore is J&B Bore Brite. I believe it's finer than the cleaner. It will leave a bore looking like a mirror and I've used it on many .22 rimfire rifles used for target shooting. It's never failed to improve the groups to some degree.

That's good advice! I failed to mention that you should ALWAYS use a bore guide, if you use it from the muzzle end. I forget that some people reading this, may not have the experience, that some of us do.
