Weird Police Luger
 

Long Story. My grandfather has a Luger that he got in WWII which he has used to introduce me to handguns. A man at the range, who seemed quite knowlegable about Lugers, told us that it was a police Luger of the East African police force. How an Oberst in the Wermacht got his hands on it is a mystery. Anyway, all the parts match, and the kind man was able to tell us it was made by DWM-this makes sense, as the Waffenmant on the side is W2A66, making it a 1929 DWM made gun. Now the weird part- It has no markings on the hump area atop the gun above the trigger. It should have a DWM logo there, right? Nothing has been ground off, and everything on the gun is original and matching. Pics soon. Who makes good ammo for a luger? Is the Wolf stuff ok?

I actually meant that there is no logo on what I, due to my lack of knowlage, would call the slider. Check out the thread before this one-same kind of luger (better condition though). Sorry.

Sounds like a "sneak" Luger, and can be correct not to have the DWM logo, I say can, pictures and serial number with suffex will help ID this gun.

Charlie, The "slider" is called a toggle. Everything is a learning process. Don't be apprehensive about asking questions. Hurry and post some photos. Want to see it!

Ok here are the pics. Some of them are a little dark, so it looks a bit dirtier than it truly is. The strawing as you can see is pretty bad but the bluing is swell. What does "sneak" mean from a literal and a collecor standpoint?

You have a great blank toggle/chamber sneak police that would look nicer in my safe than yours... "Landjagerei Schleswig (weapon #)161"...not Luger number 161...but weapon #...thanks so much for the pictures!....sneak means produced aginst treaty of WW1 outlawing productin of guns

What is a good way to store antique firearms? Right now they ( 1924 Colt .45, byf 43 P38, and the Luger) are in pistol rugs. How should I store them so that they do not degrade?

Get them out of the rugs now!, mine sit on a safe shelf and rubbed with a light oil rag once and a while

Thanks for the suggestion. Dont have a safe, though. How about a metal case with some dessicant or something? I want something airtight and dry I would assume. We have some rifles-including K98 bringback that is worth preserving- so some sort of safe really probably is best.

Nice Gun Charlie... and yes, a metal case with some dessicant (not touching the guns) should be fine. I recommend that you rub them down with oil on a soft cloth once in a while, but try not to get oil on the wood.

Lugerdoc, what does BKIW mean? And what does the condition of "sneak" have on the value of a Luger?

BKIW stands for
"Berlin-Karlsruher Industrie Werke" and was the name adopted by DWM on may 30th, 1932. The name was abandoned on the june 30th, 1936 when the old DWM name (Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken) was reinstated.

Sneak is a term that many collectors use for the guns produced during the late 20's early 1930's. It is not actually known if DWM was doing it on purpose to hide them, or if it was because they were switching over to Mauser? Most people believe the first version, as it seems likely.

I don't beleive value is affected too much, but maybe $100 to some collectors?
