40 - 41 Mauser banner markings
 

I enclose 3 photos of different markings on the right side of the receiver:

Are there any explanations of the different markings ?

From memory, on the road, no books with me.

First one is military

Second one is Police, but 7.65 is unusual, barrel changed later for re-sale? Any markings on the bottom of the barrel?

Last should be commercial, markings on the left?

Please note here that all these have a Mauser banner - no 42 nor byf - so they are commercials, and not military.

Your Eagle L should have a blank barrel. I suspect that the E/655 has had the toggle replaced or was a Banner pulled into military service?

nahpatronen, I am not sure I am too clear on what you mean by this...The Eagle L is definately Police and not commercial. The 40-41 has military acceptance marks on the right side so it is military. The blank receiver is probably commercial but that would be the only one. If you have another idea about this I would like to hear it. Jerry Burney

I guess than nahpratonen doesn't realize that police lugers were stamped with the Mauser banner on the toggle, not exclusively so, but commonly. So a Mauser banner was not necessarily a commercial pistol.

But info was good to the best of my knowledge, <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> and I have a Banner that Thor is going to redo, a real dog, he'll make it a beauty, matching Police Banner, so I knew the Banners were bought and used by the police, and that the E/655 was army acceptance.

Please note that all 4 are factory new and completely numbermatching. They have all a Mauser logo on the toggle so that's why I called them commercials. Is the conclusion ?
Mauser banner + WaA655: Police ?
Mauser banner + L: Special police marking ?
Mauser banner + nothing: purely commercial ?

NP, I suspect that your Banner E/L also has a commerical nitro proof on the LEFT SIDE of the receiver, either E/N or C/C/U. If your last one with the unmarked RIGHT receiver also has one of these proofs, it is a straight commerical. TH

Dear nahpatronen, your conclsion above seems correct to me. Some Mauser banners were sent to the military from the factory, some for police duty and, to the best of my knowledge, fewest to the comercial market. After all, it was war time! Jan Still's Third Reich Lugers begins the section on banner lugers on page 136. Very informative reading!
