Anschutz Rework
 

There is apparently very little information on this 1940 era rework. In Kenyon's book he states that "few" were made of the VONO rework and "very few" of the Anschutz (pp. 358 & 359). How many is "very few"--1000?, 100?, 10??? My Anschutz is a typical DWM military, serial #3794c, buffed, rebarrelled and nicely re-blued. The barrel has the "9mm parabellum" on the top and E/N, E/J and "JD ANSCHUTZ" stamped underneath. The serial near the chamber is different, but, interestingly, the number 3794 is stamped on the barrelnear the front sight. E/N lazy proofs appear on the right side of the frame, receiver and right sides of the breechblock and forward toggle link. The receiver has a notched chamber for an artillery sight. Do any of the experts have knowledge regarding this "interesting re-work of the Nazi era" (Kenyon's words)?

In my Navy collection is a re-worked 06, First Issue altered marked in exactly the same fashion. A very neat pistol, it retains the Navy adjustable sight and is in very sweet condition. Will send pix when I get back home off the road.

Dear Tom A. I eagerly await pix of your Anschutz reworked 1906 Navy. I wasn't aware that they also reworked Navy's. Perhaps there are Anschutz artillerys as well. I wonder if they got to any of the pre 1908 grip safety models. Thanks, Tom, for your input.

Herbert, the E/N, E/J indicate a post-1939 rework. I have a 1906 Navy, 1st Issue, Altered, that was reworked by Frankenschloss, Suhl, into a .30 caliber and carries the post-1939 proofs. Considering that the post-1939 proofs were not used until January, 1940 (IIRC), and Germany was already at war, it's my opinion that few commercial reworks were made by all of the companies combined after the beginning of 1940.

While Anschutz and VONO are better known than Frankenschloss, they are all known to have reworked Lugers and are not that common.

Thanks Doubs for your input. I will keep up the research. Records may well have been destroyed, we will probably never know the quantities reworked.
