BYF Luger

I recently saw this ad for a WW2 P.08 and, I don't believe that this is possible:

"German WW2 Luger for sale. All matching numbers & dated 1939, Original wood grips, BYF S/42 (Mauser) manufactured, Comes with 2 original WW2 aluminium bottomed mags."

Isn't 1939 too early for the BYF ordnance code to be found on a pistol? I had an idea that this practice didn't start until 1941. There were no pictures but I have requested them from the seller. Any opinions would be welcome as I've never dealt with this particular seller before.

John, you are correct regarding the year of the byf markings. I would submit that perhaps the seller didn't know what he/she was talking about since they said "BYF S/42". Either one of these marks appear at the same point on the toggle. So the chances of both being there are slim. The S/42 would be correct for a 1939, but maybe the seller thought byf was just another name for Mauser.

I would certainly give it a look see. If it is a 1939 byf, then run as fast as you can!!!

Hey Frank,

In which direction should one run from/to that 1939 byf...? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
