Give and take - cleaning P08 tips

I'm always interested in learning something new, so when I pick up on something I like to share it, so here goes.


Have you ever been frustrated trying to get into all those nooks and crannies in the P.08 when cleaning? I certainly have. Here are a few things I have learned and I would certainly like to hear from the rest of you.


I have made some progress with my wife's Q-Tips when she wasn't looking! She does tend to wonder why they dwindle so fast. I'm not talking....rank and serial only!


I have found the a child's tooth brush works very well because it has a smaller head! I heat it over a candle and bend it to a 90 degree angle just behind the head. Makes a reasonable scrubbing brush and by having a few at different angles you can accomodate many needs.

I too have gone through more q-tips than crap through a goose..they are great.......so too is the baby toothbrush, it's much softer than an adult one!

CLENZOIL is a favorite amoung many posters for preservation of strawing and finish! Marvin Cook did a real Engineer's (many of us are Engineers) test on raw and finished steel in a salt spray environment. CLENZOIL came out on a top with one other product. I use it exclusively on my Luger reworks and personal Lugers. Now if I can only get Natalie to wear it behind her ears,.......man that stuff smells good! Ted

I use Clenzoil almost exclusivly, but the "Break-Free" was the next best oil which I tested. i also have some of that in my cleaning arsenal too.


I agree that the small toothbrushes are great, but Brownell's sells some small 1/4" dia brushes which I find to be excellent in getting into the small areas. They are a bristle brush that is non-metallic. After each use, I wash them out and they last a long time. For cleaning the knurls and checkering on the Luger, I use the stiffest toothbrush I can buy (usually the real cheap ones from discount stores) and with a little bore cleaner, they get the grime out. I use Hoppes's # 9 as my bore cleaner after firing.

I prefer the smell of Hoppes #9 and use it and Sweets for bore cleaning, but am becoming to like the smell of Clenzoil too. I use it for cleaning and final "wipedown" before putting the gun back in storage.

I completely disassemble (except for that pesky mainspring) then I use mineral spirits in a small low pan with acid swabbing and tooth brushes, followed by a warm soapy water bath, followed by compressed air drying, then a light coat of Rem Oil.

One of the brushes that I find invaluable is formally called a 'stencilling' brush. It has short, stiff, natural bristles and I cut the handle down to about 2". It is great for the knurling on the toggle grips, the holes in the toggle grips and the grooves on the safety lever, the checkering on the mag release and the takedown lever. I am a Hoppes #9 guy and a RIG guy. It's never let me down in over 25 years. I am going to sample some of the Cleanzoil (sp?) just as an aphrodisiac..if it works then I might try it as a solvent/lubricant (on a Luger).
