1918 DWM 8" Barrel

Please help! Considering buying (have not seen). 1918 DWM, WWI, 9mm, 8" barrel, artillery sight on rear, matched 39XX, marked "A. Maurer Dortmund", not sure of spelling on last word. Wants $1200. Would like your opinion. Thanks.

Art, Was this the one on Auction Arms for awhile? If so, it's got some pretty heavy rust pits on the corner of the receiver. You might ask for a thorough discription first.

My mistake. It was on Gunbroker. Looks like a decent Luger. And the pits may not be as bad as they look. I would make him an offer. It's been on GB for quite awhile. He may settle for less.

Ron -- It seems he and I have come to terms. I needed to know if it was a real piece. I am assuming the A. Maurer Dortmun is the barrel maker??
Thanks for the reply.

Art, Either the barrel maker. Or possibly the gunsmith who built it. German Custom Smiths often put their names on their work.

Art, and I know this might be obvious, it is more of a shooter than collector, nice piece, but not a true artillery.

Ron -- a little late in replying. Did not buy the 8" DWM above. However, and anyone please jump in -- have Erfurt Naval for sometime now and recently found marks I did know existed. In the half circles at the bottom of the grip where the mag finger buttons fit into, there are what seems to be "T" on one side and a "1" above a "K" on the other side. I also have a 1916 Artillery DWM being delivered tomorrow and have a 1908? or 1920? Luger plus others. Would appreciate info on those marks. Thanks

An ERFURT Navy Luger???

Capt Art 10-11-2004 10:29 AM

John --
I assume your saying there is no such beast? May I add the barrel is not marked but says "Allemagil" but appears to have a Crown stamp??, can this be one of the barrel makers previously mentioned? Also are all navys dated?
Thanks, Art

Capt Art,

To the best of my knowledge, all military issue Navy Lugers were manufactured by DWM... Erfurt did participate in Artillery Luger production, but not Navies as far as I know. Seems your "Erfurt" Navy is the result of either some rework program, or it is a parts gun...

John --
As I said it is beautiful. It was the first Luger I bought in about 50 years. Good thing I didn't pay big money for it. I paid as much as a rusty mismatched P.08 would bring. I will now start the hunt for a real one to add to my collection. Need an original 1916 Arty holster, any ideas, I have been looking. Thanks, Art

Art, the chances of finding a 1916 dated artillery holster are not good, damned few if any are known. 1915 dated holsters are far and away the most common and would be quite correct for your pistol.

Capt Art 10-11-2004 01:47 PM

Thanks George and thanks Thor for the tip on George Anderson. Will look for a 1915 holster.
