Officers name on Luger,
 

Is this common, also has serial # which starts with a o-1180599, name is Karl Martin.1940 model,all matching numbers,gun in very, very good shape,gun # 6008 with black holster & extra mag. 2 proof marks,655 with eagles, also has 2 more eagles, 1 of them on barrell.Help

This is unlikely to impossible to be a German name.

I would bet money this is a US GI, who put their name on a trophy, as the serial number is like ours was, and the last name of Martin.

Welcome to the forum, pictures can help a lot, what are you trying to find out? You might want to check in this section for otehr 1940 marked guns. That is the year it was made, the model is actualy the 1908 (i.e. P08), made by Mauser, on the toggle it should be marked S/42 or 42??

Long ago before the Social Security number reigned as king soldiers were given a service number. Mine in 1969 was RA (Regular Army)-09010923. The sequence and number of digits matches with what you have presented. Also, welcome.

During WW2, officeers service numbers were prefixed with the letter "O" so I think the inscription belongs to an American officer. Although many records were destroyed of WW2 vintage, the Veterans Administration has many copies of some records and may be able to verify that the "O" number inscription belonged to a GI...

The serial number of the gun should be on the front of the frame above the trigger guard. If this is where your "O" number appears, this may be one of the Lugers that was assembled by German factory workers at the Mauser or Krieghoff plants for GI's immediately after these factories were captured.
