1914 DWM
 

A local shop owner has a DWM under the counter. Everything looks right except the toggle has an overstamped number [lookes like a 36 has been stamped to 76]. Given that the wear matches on all parts and the owner claims that it was a WW2 bring back is it possible that the overstamp was done by factory? Gun has holster, matching mags, and bring back papers.

Jim it is possible if it is a Weimar era gun, but I am always leery when the overstamp is obvious.

Any Weimar proofs or acceptance marks on it? Is the toggle WW1 era with proofs on it?

Jim, Quite a few of the recent Russian imports had "X"ed out numbers with new numbers stamped above, to force match the gun. I'd check for importer marks or their removal, on such a PO8. Tom

Everything is correct on this piece except for the over stamp. It was brought back to the us in 1945 according to the bring back papers. Holster is correct and the mags match. Acceptance stamps are correct. It does not have a unit stamp on front grip. wear is consistent throughout the gun. Has 85-90 percent blue and strawed parts at 65-70 percent. Priced at 650 for complete outfit.

Jim, if the holster is an original and in good shape, has the proper markings on the back, it alone will be worth probably $200+ , at least that is what they go for at Ebay, so you are getting the Luger for $450, darn good price in todays market, I say buy it, if not for yourself, get it for me!

Jim, I be in Montana next month, if your in the Billings/Custer area, perhaps I could help you look at it, and see if its clean and what you want, but the price sounds good.

Factory, no, but it was possibly done at a repair point or by one of the famous Luger repair and rebuild facilities run by an AGT (American gun tinkerer). Frankly, the price sounds so good, especially with the holster, that I would buy it, overstamp or not.

The East European force matches use a size and style of numbering so different from the original that no one should think the numbers original.
