1937 S/42 went to the range today.....
 

Hello everyone,
Took my P.08 to the gun range today and fired 50rds through her. I used Geko 124 grain ammo. I also installed some aftermarket grips so that I would not damage my originals.

The results were three "failure to feeds" (out of the 50 rds fired). Stovepipe type misfeeds with the rounds that were trying to be chambered from the magazine. The only time they failed to feed was when I used one hand to fire it. All other times (including rapid firing the weapon) were successful. The times that no misfeeds occured was when I used the normal second hand under the magazine posture.

Another weird thing I noticed was the magazines had a deep scaring where the magazine latch rubs into the magazine body, when the mag is inserted into the weapon. I don't know if the mags were like that before, I just noticed them when I was finished firing. Sound like a problem???

I found this weapon to be very accurate, but didn't like the jamming up part.

I am not sure about the Luger (have forgot, although a long time ago there was a thread on this), but not holding some semi-auto pistols securely in your hand will result in failures to feed. The gun requires the push back to be slowed by a firm grip.

Is it possible that your one handed grip, was uh, limper than a two handed?

As I said, I don't remember if this pertains to the Luger, but I bet it does?

Do you have a new magazine spring? If not, you should.

Wish I had the option of a two handed grip. Maybe one day I'll be able to shoot that way. Most like likey not though. Oh well.

Yep, my "one handed grip" was limper than my two handed grip. That would affect the feeding I'm sure. I don't have new springs in the mags, I can't even get them apart to install new ones. I'm afraid of damage if I do (the mags have the little pin in the bottom shell of the mag).

I don't think it was the springs, I'm pretty sure it was my grip jamming up my Luger. The "one handed grip" was the only time it jammed up.

I guess I'm just used to my HK USP's non-jamming capabilities.

The Luger was also lub'ed up pretty good and had been thouroughly cleaned before the range.

New magazines are an option. I got a MecGar (sp?)
and a Triple K, the latter really works well for me. Cheaper than Dirt has good prices as do members here occasionally. They will however take advantage of you on a trade if you aren't careful.

MiniG, It's possible that when you are using the two hand hold, that you are pushing the magazine up in the mag well to it's maximum, which improves the feeding. If the locking notch of your mag is worn, it may not be high enough, without the push, for the breech block to catch the next round every time. Tom

I was shooting my Frankenluger today. It has always functioned well with the numbered aluminum bottom magazine that came with it. Today I tried a nearly new MecGar magazine that cured function problems in my other two Lugers. Man, Frankenluger hated that magazine and screwed up every time. I switched back to the beat up old German magazine and it functioned perfectly again.

I guess the moral of the story is to try as many magazines as you can lay your hands on in the gun (making sure that they are latched in place).
