Unknown mark on a S/42
 

My dad recently purchased a S/42 G code luger. Using the information found in the forum we were able to indentify all the markings except for one.

It is a "zig-zag" rectangle on the right side above the trigger guard. It has some type of wording, but all we could make out was N_T END___
I am not sure those letters are right. I have attached a drawing of the mark and the location where it is found. Any help would be appreciated.

Gus, can you provide a close up of this marking, higher quality, rather than less quality?

Does the pistol have English proofs? My guess is it says "Not English" or "Not English Make".

Edited to correct the word "Made" with "Make".

Thanks for the replies. The picture of the luger is one I found on the web. I was just using it to show the marking's location. Sorry, I meant to say that in the first message, but my fingers type faster than my brain thinks.

I will try to get some quality images of the actual gun today and post a link. I didn't see any British proofs, but I am not sure what I am looking at.

Would this be a war trophy brought back to England? Or maybe a commercial model for English sale? It has all matching numbers except the magazine, with 95% finish. Bought it at a local store for $700. Thanks again for the help.

KJ, it's difficult to know what to make of it without more information and - hopefully - nice clear pictures with lots of detail. If marked, as I suspect, "Not English Make" then it has been proofed in England prior to 1955 as required under their laws for guns made outside of England and not having proofmarks acceptable to the English. The stamp "Not English Make" went away in 1955 according to "The Standard Directory of Proof Marks".

KJ, the "NP" on the barrel is most certainly the British "Nitro Proof" and while I can't make out the other marks they will either be a crown or an arm with a sword depending upon the proof house that did the testing. I can make enough of the "Not English Make" out to be positive about that mark.

Your Luger was brought into England (war trophy?) and submitted for testing to one of the proof houses..... London or Birmingham. It was also done prior to 1955.
