Luger Lanyards
 

I just purchased the book THE P08 LUGER PISTOL by de Vries & Marten at an exorbitant price on ebay. Lots of interesting official German WWII propaganda photos.

There has been much discussion about the use of lanyards with the Luger. Perhaps the following pictures will shed some light on the subject. I hope the notations with the pictures are readable.

Hugh, I was surprised by what you paid for that book. I picked up a copy at the Salida CO gun show two weeks ago. Needless to say you must be way richer than my humble self. There is also an interesting photo of a deaths head stamp on a policemans holster at the back of the book.

I have been researching Luger lanyards for over five years and have quite an archive of photo's taken of original lanyards found in European collections and combat photo's of soldiers wearing them. I also have copies of German Heers orders for the issue and use of Luger lanyards issued to Cavalry and motorcycle troops. An interesting subject to me. Jerry Burney

In the first photo, there is no magazine in the luger. This also seems to be the case in the last photo. Perhaps this is a safety measure for the photography session. The captions make a couple of seeming errors. The mention that HS magazines were adopted in 1939 but old aluminum bottom mags were still used at a later date omits the fact that many HS mags had aluminum bottoms. Also, was there a "western front" in 1939?

That single photo of the deaths head holster with the SS soldier (very clearly visible helmet decal) nearly makes the entire book worthwhile. Curiously, many of the book's photos are not about lugers but depict other pistols such as 7.65 Mausers and P.38s.

Also in the book are two photos of a French holster making shop. You can see the leather being cut and sewn BUT there is a German soldier standing in the back of one photo suggesting it was an inspection or staged photo. The workers might not operate with such clean and well-organized methods on a regular day.

IMHO, the knot on the lower loop looks to have been retied and is NOT AOT (as originally tied)!

What??!!...Do you think I am an idiot? Anything offered at less than full price is obviously a fake...therefore I demand to pay full issue price! [img]wink.gif[/img]

Jerry Burney (lugerholsterrepair@yahoo.com) once told me that he has made reproduction Luger lanyards. I have never seen any, but I am sure if he makes them they are excellent quality.

Sure, there was most definitely a "western front" in 1939.

On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland.

As a consequence, on September 3, 1939, France and Great Britain declared war on Germany.

From that moment on, an official state of war existed between France and Germany along what to the Germans was their "western front." As we know, however, nothing much happened until the following May with the intervening period called the "phony war" or Sitzkrieg.

But no doubt there was ample opportunity on the Western Front for great propaganda photos like the ones shown and plenty of training and moving up of troops just in case the French attacked.

I posted a thread and expressed interest in a pistol on an auction site, after which you started bidding on it under a &lt;Hidden&gt; identity. I expected that you would have honored my intention to purchase the pistol, since it did not fetch a bid in the many times that it had appeared on the auction sites.

I guess that some people only want what others want. And then to try to snatch it away secretely is not manly. I expected integrity.

I had no intention of ever winning that bid for the book on which you were bidding. I did my research before running your bid up. The books were located and the check was in the mail.

Gentlemen, Gentlemen...This is not what we expect from friends and members of the Forum is it? If we harbor these petty animosities the least we can expect is that you keep it private. This sets a horrible example of bad behavior that frankly should not see the light of day here or anywhere else. SHAME! I know both of you and Wes, I expected much better from a man of your obvious intelligence, good humor and character.I have found myself bidding against a friend and member of the Forum before and we have always managed to communicate and work it out. I have also bid against friends where I did not recognize their moniker. I generally do not bid against those I know if I can possibly help it and I would NEVER bid to drive up the price to punish someone. Just for the information of those on the forum, if you look at a bid on Auction Arms that has a reserve and you see the bidder listed as (***HIDDEN***), it means that the reserve price has not been reached at that point. No bidder will be identified on a reserve auction until the reserve price has been reached or exceeded.

I know this because I wrote directly to Auction Arms and inquired. Their reasoning is that items with a reserve price were being offered to the highest bidder after the fact when the bids didn't reach the reserve. The offer was being made privately and Auction Arms was being denied their percentage of the sale. To eliminate that problem, AA shows everyone who bids as (***HIDDEN***) until the reserve is reached.
