I have a Mauser mismatch. It has the byf code on the toggle link. On the chamber it has 42. I had been assuming it was the date, but since it's a mismatch it dawns on me it might be the 42 code. SO, is it a 1942 receiver or a 42 code receiver?

I moved your post to the P-08 Military Luger forum (since the code byf is a military production code).

The '42' over the chamber indicates the year of manufacture - 1942. The byf code on the toggle indicates the company that produced this Luger (Mauser).

Your pistol is a "mismatch" only if the two digits of the serial number that are placed on various parts do not match the last two digits of the full serial number (including the suffix character) that should appear on the front of the grip frame.

The full serial number (less the suffix character) will also appear on the left front of the upper receiver on military models.

Thanks, John. That confirms the date, I had been assuming it was a 1942 manufacture.

It's a mismatch no matter how you slice it, it has a 5 inch 7.65 mm barrel and the extractor has a mismatched number. The heck of it is the magazine has a matching number, which I am given to understand is not all that common. There are a couple of other points that don't quite jibe. On the other hand it's my favorite shooter, I like the 5 inch barrel.
