Stock on a Luger Legal???
I will check with BATFE, but in the meantime, can anybody tell me if it is legal to stick a stock on a Luger?
I have owned a machinegun in the past, and the process to get that is no big deal. Is a tax stamp required for a stock for a Luger? |
Heinmot, it is my understanding that it is if the Luger originally had a stock, for our purposes that would be the LP08's or artillery models only.

The laws as I know them are as follows. Artillery can use the "Artillery" stock only even if it's a repro. The Navy can only use the "Navy" stock. If you were talking of a 4" gun then the only way to do that would be a Form 1 and register it as an SBR.

Also, if you have a 16 inch barrel, then a stock is legal also.

These answers would seem to indicate that there is no stock made for the P08 military pistols with the stock lug. Were stocks ever made for these when they were produced? (I have a 1918 DWM).

There were no stocks "made" for short barreled P08 military pistols. Primarily to facilitate the production process all frames were made with the stock lug, but only LP08 and Naval Lugers were issued with a shoulder stock. Therefore, only these two types of military Luger under BATF rules that are legal curio and relic types to have the proper type of shoulder stock attached. Attachment to a short barreled military Luger makes it a "short barreled rifle" and therefore illegal.

Werent there some made for the Finnish M23s? I know these are so uncommon that they arent normally mentioned.

Thor, I believe that a good case could be made for adding the Finnish "SA" marked M1923 lugers in 7.65mm to the listing of "stockable pistols" since many photos show them being used that way and most early Finnish luger holsters were made with straps to also carry the LPO8 stock. I understand that the 5000 stocks that they received in the 1920s, were used WW1 German surplus and in most cases will have been renumbered on the lug, at least once. All we need, is for someone to apply to the ATF to have this combination added to the C&R listing. Any volunteers? TH
