P-06 Grip Safety shooting problem
I have a 70's Mauser and the grip safety is a shooting problem.
If I hold the pistol normally with the back of the grip in the web of my hand - it will not fire My hand web is too soft to depress the safety fully I have to modify my grip such that the base joint of my thumb is at the back of the grip to fully depress the safety. This is weird and unnatural for shooting. I could build up the safety so the web will fully depress or somehow modify the safety so a lesser depression will disengage any thoughts from the forum |
That's a new one on me...
Sticking something that's removable and won't hurt the finish to the back of the lever seems like your best bet to help you shoot it while preserving its original state. Newer series 1911's have an extra bump on the lever (not a fan), so mimicking that setup sounds like it might help. I think it's still possible to find an extra part, which could be modified as severely as you want. Spring strength can vary. I have a few Lugers with the original version of the grip safety. The spring on one is quite stiff, on another, not much more than a whisper is needed to depress it, although its action is positive. Finding a weaker spring to install, or creating one, might also work--although I'm not sure how the latter would be accomplished. Maybe you could make a special glove that would reinforce the soft area of your web with an incorporated insert? |
Remouve and buy other spring and soften it

Patrice,
it is not the spring. It is the width of the grip spans the gap between my first thumb joint and index finger joint. a narrower grip like my Hammerli fits in hard against the web, but the Mauser being a little wider does not so there is very little contact between web and grip safety. |
You can buy adhesive-backed weather strip tape that is about 3/16" thick, cut it to size, and affix it to your grip safety. I think that will add enough extra thickness that the grip safety will work as it should.
Removal is straight forward; just peel it off. Use Goo Gone to remove adhesive residue. It should not damage your finish. -Bob |
I have to add some material to my grip safety on my 1911's that are equipped with beavertail safeties. With a high grip, I get the same pocket and cannot disengage the safety. Rem Oil or WD40 applied to the adhesive will dissolve it quickly and not harm your finish.

What about modifying a glove with some sort of padding or built up leather? This way you don’t have to do anything to the gun.

insert a filler piece into the web area of a glove.
I always wear gloves.... |
Moleskin can be cut to fit, works well in these situations.
