1906 DWM Swiss Luger

I ran across what I hope was a reasonably good deal on a 1906 DWM Swiss Luger. It followed me home, so I had to keep it. Actually… I don’t have it yet. The deal is done, but I have not received it. The attached. Photos are from the sellers site.

I could definitely use a little help with this one. I’m wondering if it was one of the transition pieces between cross in Sunburst and cross in shield? Serial number is below 10,000, but it is cross in shield. There is another interesting little bit about this pistol… Make sure to take a look at what is on the muzzle of the barrel.

Also, what service do you think this went to – police, army, or…?

Nice looking Swiss, with a front sight protector. Testing my memory, probably the early part of the second contract.

Two areas of interest with this:

Is it unusual for a 4-digit s/n to have cross and shield? I thought those began at 10,000?

And secondly, what does the attached marking indicate?

Thanks!

The cross-in-shield marking began with serial number 9001. Your P'00/'06 Swiss Luger was part of a 1000 parts kits order from DWM delivered to W+F and assembled in 1908. If I'm reading Gortz & Sturgess correctly, the assembly of the kits up to serial number 10,000 was completed by 7 December, 1908.

Your pistol would have been issued to the Swiss military.

Thanks so much for all the good info! Still wondering what that mark means. It’s on the barrel.

That is a shield with a diagonal mark across it. It's a DWM factory stamp that can be found on some early DWM barrels.

Here is a picture of the underside of a barrel of a Portuguese M2 Luger made within a couple of years of your Swiss Luger. Look between the circle-triangle stamp and the number 1. You'll see a lightly struck DWM shield identical to the mark on your barrel. It is partly covered by the other stamps.

It’s amazing what you can find once you know what you’re looking for.

Thanks, Doub!!
